What does 1 Samuel 17:57 mean?

As David was making his way from his meeting with Saul to go fight Goliath (1 Samuel 17:40), the king had asked the commander of his army, Abner, whose son David was. Abner did not know, and the king commissioned him to find out (1 Samuel 17:55–56).

In the interim, David defeated Goliath. Confident in the Lord's protection and might, the youth accepted the Philistine champion's challenge (1 Samuel 17:8–10) for a fight to the death on the field of battle (1 Samuel 17:32–50). In the name of the Lord of hosts (1 Samuel 17:45), David brought the giant (1 Samuel 17:4–7) down with his sling and cut off Goliath's head with the Philistine's own sword (1 Samuel 17:49, 51).

Now Abner completes his mission following the battle, delivering the unlikely young champion of Israel before Saul with Goliath's still-fresh head in his hands.
