2 Samuel chapter 22
English Standard Version
1And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2He said, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. 4I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. 5 "For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me; 6 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 7 "In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears. 8"Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry. 9Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. 10 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. 11He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind. 12He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. 13Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. 14 The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice. 15And he sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them. 16Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 17 "He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. 19They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. 20 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. 21"The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. 24I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. 25 And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. 26 "With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. 29 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. 30For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31This God — his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32"For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. 34 He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. 35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great. 37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip; 38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. 39I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. 40For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. 41You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. 42They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. 43I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. 44"You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. 45Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. 46Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses. 47"The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, 49who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence. 50 "For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name. 51 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever."
New International Version
3my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me. 4"I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. 5The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
6The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. 7"In my distress I called to the Lord; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears. 8The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry. 9Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. 10He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. 11He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. 12He made darkness his canopy around him— the dark rain clouds of the sky. 13Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. 14The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. 15He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
16The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. 17"He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 19They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support.
20He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. 21"The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. 22For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I am not guilty of turning from my God. 23All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. 24I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.
25The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. 26"To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, 27to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. 28You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. 29You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.
30With your help I can advance against a troop ; with my God I can scale a wall. 31"As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. 32For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? 33It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. 34He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great.
37You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. 38"I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. 39I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. 40You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. 41You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. 42They cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the Lord, but he did not answer.
43I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. 44"You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, 45foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
46They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. 47"The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior! 48He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me, 49who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me.

2He said, 'The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence. 4I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies. 5For the waves of death encompassed me; The floods of destruction terrified me; 6The ropes of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. 7In my distress I called upon the Lord, Yes, I called out to my God; And from His temple He heard my voice, And my cry for help came into His ears. 8Then the earth shook and quaked, The foundations of heaven were trembling And were shaken, because He was angry. 9Smoke went up out of His nostrils, And fire from His mouth was devouring; Coals were kindled by it. 10He also bowed the heavens down low, and came down With thick darkness under His feet. 11He rode on a cherub and flew; He appeared on the wings of the wind. 12He made darkness canopies around Him, A mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky. 13From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled. 14The Lord thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice. 15And He shot arrows and scattered them, Lightning, and routed them. 16Then the channels of the sea appeared, The foundations of the world were exposed By the rebuke of the Lord, From the blast of the breath of His nostrils. 17He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. 19They confronted me on the day of my disaster, But the Lord was my support. 20He also brought me out into an open place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me. 21The Lord has treated me in accordance with my righteousness; In accordance with the cleanliness of my hands He has repaid me. 22For I have kept the ways of the Lord, And have not acted wickedly against my God. 23For all His ordinances were before me, And as for His statutes, I did not deviate from them. 24I was also blameless toward Him, And I have kept myself from my wrongdoing. 25So the Lord has repaid me in accordance with my righteousness, In accordance with my cleanliness before His eyes. 26With the one who is faithful You show Yourself faithful, With the blameless one You prove Yourself blameless; 27With the one who is pure You show Yourself pure, But with the perverted You show Yourself astute. 28And You save an afflicted people; But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You humiliate. 29For You are my lamp, Lord; And the Lord illuminates my darkness. 30For by You I can run at a troop of warriors; By my God I can leap over a wall. 31As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the Lord is refined; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. 32For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33God is my strong fortress; And He sets the blameless on His way. 34He makes my feet like deer’s feet, And sets me on my high places. 35He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your help makes me great. 37You enlarge my steps under me, And my feet have not slipped. 38I pursued my enemies and eliminated them, And I did not turn back until they were finished off. 39And I have devoured them and smashed them, so that they would not rise; And they fell under my feet. 40For You have encircled me with strength for battle; You have forced those who rose up against me to bow down under me. 41You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, And I destroyed those who hated me. 42They looked, but there was no one to save them; Even to the Lord, but He did not answer them. 43Then I pulverized them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and trampled them like the mud of the streets. 44You have also saved me from the contentions of my people; You have kept me as head of the nations; A people I have not known serve me. 45Foreigners pretend to obey me; As soon as they hear, they obey me. 46Foreigners lose heart, And come trembling out of their fortresses. 47The Lord lives, and blessed be my Rock; And exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48The God who executes vengeance for me, And brings down peoples under me, 49Who also brings me out from my enemies; You also raise me above those who rise up against me; You rescue me from the violent person. 50Therefore I will give thanks to You, Lord, among the nations, And I will sing praises to Your name. 51 He is a tower of salvation to His king, And shows favor to His anointed, To David and his descendants forever.'

2He said: The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, 3my God, my rock where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, you save me from violence. 4I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies. 5For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of destruction terrified me.
6The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 7I called to the Lord in my distress; I called to my God. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry for help reached his ears. 8Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because he burned with anger. 9Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. 10He bent the heavens and came down, total darkness beneath his feet. 11He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. 12He made darkness a canopy around him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. 13From the radiance of his presence, blazing coals were ignited. 14The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard. 15He shot arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them.
16The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 17He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water. 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. 19They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support.
20He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. 21The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; he repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. 22For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not turned from my God to wickedness. 23Indeed, I let all his ordinances guide me and have not disregarded his statutes. 24I was blameless before him and kept myself from my iniquity.
25So the Lord repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. 26With the faithful you prove yourself faithful, with the blameless you prove yourself blameless, 27with the pure you prove yourself pure; but with the crooked you prove yourself shrewd. 28You rescue an oppressed people, but your eyes are set against the proud— you humble them. 29 Lord, you are my lamp; the Lord illuminates my darkness. 30With you I can attack a barricade, and with my God I can leap over a wall.
31God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him. 32For who is God besides the Lord? And who is a rock? Only our God. 33God is my strong refuge; he makes my way perfect. 34He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights. 35He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36You have given me the shield of your salvation; your help exalts me. 37You make a spacious place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way. 38I pursue my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out. 39I wipe them out and crush them, and they do not rise; they fall beneath my feet. 40You have clothed me with strength for battle; you subdue my adversaries beneath me. 41You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me. 42They look, but there is no one to save them— they look to the Lord, but he does not answer them.
43I pulverize them like dust of the earth; I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets. 44You have freed me from the feuds among my people; you have preserved me as head of nations; a people I had not known serve me. 45Foreigners submit to me cringing; as soon as they hear, they obey me.
46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications. 47The Lord lives—blessed be my rock! God, the rock of my salvation, is exalted. 48God—he grants me vengeance and casts down peoples under me.
49He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; you rescue me from violent men. 50Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, Lord; I will sing praises about your name. 51He is a tower of salvation for his king; he shows loyalty to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
New Living Translation
2He sang: 'The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; 3my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence. 4I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.
5'The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me. 6The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. 7But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears.
8'Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the heavens shook; they quaked because of his anger. 9Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. 10He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. 11Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. 12He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dense rain clouds. 13A great brightness shone around him, and burning coals blazed forth. 14The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. 15He shot arrows and scattered his enemies; his lightning flashed, and they were confused. 16Then at the command of the Lord, at the blast of his breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare.
17'He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. 18He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. 19They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the Lord supported me. 20He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me. 21The Lord rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence. 22For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. 23I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees. 24I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin. 25The Lord rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence.
26'To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. 27To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. 28You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them. 29O Lord, you are my lamp. The Lord lights up my darkness. 30In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall.
31'God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. 32For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? 33God is my strong fortress, and he makes my way perfect. 34He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. 35He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. 36You have given me your shield of victory; your help has made me great. 37You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.
38'I chased my enemies and destroyed them; I did not stop until they were conquered. 39I consumed them; I struck them down so they did not get up; they fell beneath my feet. 40You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. 41You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. 42They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer. 43I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trampled them in the gutter like dirt.
44'You gave me victory over my accusers. You preserved me as the ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. 45Foreign nations cringe before me; as soon as they hear of me, they submit. 46They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds.
47'The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted! 48He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he brings down the nations under me 49and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents. 50For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name. 51You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.'

2And he said: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. 4I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. 5“When the waves of death surrounded me, The floods of ungodliness made me afraid. 6The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. 7In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry entered His ears. 8“Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry. 9Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it. 10He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet. 11He rode upon a cherub, and flew; And He was seen upon the wings of the wind. 12He made darkness canopies around Him, Dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. 13From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled. 14“The Lord thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice. 15He sent out arrows and scattered them; Lightning bolts, and He vanquished them. 16Then the channels of the sea were seen, The foundations of the world were uncovered, At the rebuke of the Lord, At the blast of the breath of His nostrils. 17“He sent from above, He took me, He drew me out of many waters. 18He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me; For they were too strong for me. 19They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the Lord was my support. 20 He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me. 21“The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me. 22For I have kept the ways of the Lord, And have not wickedly departed from my God. 23For all His judgments were before me; And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them. 24I was also blameless before Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. 25Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in His eyes. 26“With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless; 27With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd. 28You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down. 29“For You are my lamp, O Lord; The Lord shall enlighten my darkness. 30For by You I can run against a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall. 31 As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. 32“For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33God is my strength and power, And He makes my way perfect. 34He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places. 35He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36“You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great. 37You enlarged my path under me; So my feet did not slip. 38“I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them; Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed. 39And I have destroyed them and wounded them, So that they could not rise; They have fallen under my feet. 40For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose against me. 41You have also given me the necks of my enemies, So that I destroyed those who hated me. 42They looked, but there was none to save; Even to the Lord, but He did not answer them. 43Then I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trod them like dirt in the streets, And I spread them out. 44“You have also delivered me from the strivings of my people; You have kept me as the head of the nations. A people I have not known shall serve me. 45The foreigners submit to me; As soon as they hear, they obey me. 46The foreigners fade away, And come frightened from their hideouts. 47“The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let God be exalted, The Rock of my salvation! 48 It is God who avenges me, And subdues the peoples under me; 49He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man. 50Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name. 51“ He is the tower of salvation to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.”
