What does Exodus 8:12 mean?
When his magicians achieved only partial success (Exodus 8:5–7), Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron to make a deal (Exodus 8:8). Pharaoh promised to free Israel, and Moses agreed to petition the Lord so that Pharaoh would understand that only the Lord God of Israel was to be worshipped (Exodus 8:9–11). Moses and Aaron now leave, presumably from Pharaoh's palace, and Moses makes good on his side of the arrangement.Moses has already been told that Pharaoh will be resistant (Exodus 3:19–20). Pharaoh has been brutal (Exodus 1:11–14) and spiteful (Exodus 5:4–9). Yet Moses is not in control of the situation—the Lord is (Exodus 6:1). He doesn't presume to know what will happen, or what should happen. Though certainly expecting a certain answer (Exodus 8:11), Moses simply prays with integrity (Matthew 5:37; James 5:12) and puts the situation into God's hands.
