What does Isaiah 19:23 mean?
If the idea of Egypt turning to worship the one True God was stunning to the people of Judah (Isaiah 19:19–22), what Isaiah writes next must have been earth shattering. In the ancient near East, a well-traveled highway between two nations was evidence those nations had become friendly, and possibly even allies. It meant the path between them was open for trade and connection between those two peoples. In that future day when Egypt serves the Lord God of Israel, there will be a highway between Egypt and the Assyrians. This is significant due to these two nations having a longstanding feud. In this future day that feud will be ended. Even more, they will worship the God of Israel together. The two former enemies will be united by their worship of the Lord.
Isaiah is speaking of two of the superpowers of his day. But he is also pointing to a time when people from the most unlikely places will stand together as one under the mighty hand of God. Those who occupy Egypt at that time will worship the Lord God of Israel with those who live in the land once known as Assyria. The allegiances of the world will be remapped and remade by the united allegiance to Christ (Isaiah 2:1–5; Revelation 20:1–4).
