Jeremiah chapter 26
English Standard Version
1
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the
Lord
:
2
"Thus says the
Lord
: Stand in the court of the
Lord
's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the
Lord
all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word.
3
It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds.
4
You shall say to them, ‘Thus says the
Lord
: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you,
5
and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened,
6
then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.’"
7
The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the
Lord
.
8
And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the
Lord
had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, "You shall die!
9
Why have you prophesied in the name of the
Lord
, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?" And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the
Lord
.
10
When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king 's house to the house of the
Lord
and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the
Lord
.
11
Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, "This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears."
12
Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, "The
Lord
sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.
13
Now therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the
Lord
your God, and the
Lord
will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you.
14
But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you.
15
Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the
Lord
sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."
16
Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the
Lord
our God."
17
And certain of the elders of the land arose and spoke to all the assembled people, saying,
18
"Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah: ‘Thus says the
Lord
of hosts,
"‘Zion shall be plowed as a field;
Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,
and the mountain of the house a wooded height.’
19
Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the
Lord
and entreat the favor of the
Lord
, and did not the
Lord
relent of the disaster that he had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great disaster upon ourselves."
20
There was another man who prophesied in the name of the
Lord
, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah.
21
And when King Jehoiakim, with all his warriors and all the officials, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt.
22
Then King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men, Elnathan the son of Achbor and others with him,
23
and they took Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, who struck him down with the sword and dumped his dead body into the burial place of the common people.
24
But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah so that he was not given over to the people to be put to death.
New International Version
1
Early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the
Lord
:
2
"This is what the
Lord
says: Stand in the courtyard of the
Lord
’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the
Lord
. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word.
3
Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways. Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done.
4
Say to them, ‘This is what the
Lord
says: If you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you,
5
and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened),
6
then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city a curse among all the nations of the earth.’ "
7
The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the
Lord
.
8
But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the
Lord
had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, "You must die!
9
Why do you prophesy in the
Lord
’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?" And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the
Lord
.
10
When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the
Lord
and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate of the
Lord
’s house.
11
Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, "This man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears!"
12
Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: "The
Lord
sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard.
13
Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the
Lord
your God. Then the
Lord
will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you.
14
As for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right.
15
Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the
Lord
has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing."
16
Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man should not be sentenced to death! He has spoken to us in the name of the
Lord
our God."
17
Some of the elders of the land stepped forward and said to the entire assembly of people,
18
"Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. He told all the people of Judah, ‘This is what the
Lord
Almighty says:
" ‘Zion will be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,
the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.’
19
"Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did not Hezekiah fear the
Lord
and seek his favor? And did not the
Lord
relent, so that he did not bring the disaster he pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster on ourselves!"
20
(Now Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim was another man who prophesied in the name of the
Lord
; he prophesied the same things against this city and this land as Jeremiah did.
21
When King Jehoiakim and all his officers and officials heard his words, the king was determined to put him to death. But Uriah heard of it and fled in fear to Egypt.
22
King Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan son of Akbor to Egypt, along with some other men.
23
They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.)
24
Furthermore, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, and so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

"This is what the

3
Perhaps they will listen and turn—each from his evil way of life—so that I might relent concerning the disaster that I plan to do to them because of the evil of their deeds.
4
You are to say to them, ‘This is what the
Lord
says: If you do not listen to me by living according to my instruction that I set before you
5
and by listening to the words of my servants the prophets —whom I have been sending to you time and time again, though you did not listen—
6
I will make this temple like Shiloh. I will make this city an example for cursing for all the nations of the earth.’"
7
The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the temple of the
Lord
.
8
When he finished the address the
Lord
had commanded him to deliver to all the people, immediately the priests, the prophets, and all the people took hold of him, yelling, "You must surely die!
9
How dare you prophesy in the name of the
Lord
, ‘This temple will become like Shiloh and this city will become an uninhabited ruin’!" Then all the people crowded around Jeremiah at the
Lord
’s temple.
10
When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went from the king’s palace to the

12
Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, "The
Lord
sent me to prophesy all the words that you have heard against this temple and city.
13
So now, correct your ways and deeds, and obey the
Lord
your God so that he might relent concerning the disaster he had pronounced against you.
14
As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think is good and right.
15
But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its residents, for it is certain the
Lord
has sent me to speak all these things directly to you."
16
Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, "This man doesn’t deserve the death sentence, for he has spoken to us in the name of the
Lord
our God!"
17
Some of the elders of the land stood up and said to all the assembled people,
18
"Micah the Moreshite prophesied in the days of King Hezekiah of Judah and said to all the people of Judah, ‘This is what the
Lord
of Armies says:
Zion will be plowed like a field,

and the temple’s mountain will be a high thicket.’

But King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and certain other men with him went to Egypt.
23
They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who executed him with the sword and threw his corpse into the burial place of the common people.
24
But Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
New Living Translation
1
This message came to Jeremiah from the
Lord
early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah.
2
This is what the
Lord
says: Stand in the courtyard in front of the Temple of the
Lord
, and make an announcement to the people who have come there to worship from all over Judah. Give them my entire message; include every word.
3
Perhaps they will listen and turn from their evil ways. Then I will change my mind about the disaster I am ready to pour out on them because of their sins.
4
Say to them, ‘This is what the
Lord
says: If you will not listen to me and obey my word I have given you,
5
and if you will not listen to my servants, the prophets — for I sent them again and again to warn you, but you would not listen to them —
6
then I will destroy this Temple as I destroyed Shiloh, the place where the Tabernacle was located. And I will make Jerusalem an object of cursing in every nation on earth.’'
7
The priests, the prophets, and all the people listened to Jeremiah as he spoke in front of the
Lord
’s Temple.
8
But when Jeremiah had finished his message, saying everything the
Lord
had told him to say, the priests and prophets and all the people at the Temple mobbed him. 'Kill him!' they shouted.
9
What right do you have to prophesy in the
Lord
’s name that this Temple will be destroyed like Shiloh? What do you mean, saying that Jerusalem will be destroyed and left with no inhabitants?' And all the people threatened him as he stood in front of the Temple.
10
When the officials of Judah heard what was happening, they rushed over from the palace and sat down at the New Gate of the Temple to hold court.
11
The priests and prophets presented their accusations to the officials and the people. 'This man should die!' they said. 'You have heard with your own ears what a traitor he is, for he has prophesied against this city.'
12
Then Jeremiah spoke to the officials and the people in his own defense. 'The
Lord
sent me to prophesy against this Temple and this city,' he said. 'The
Lord
gave me every word that I have spoken.
13
But if you stop your sinning and begin to obey the
Lord
your God, he will change his mind about this disaster that he has announced against you.
14
As for me, I am in your hands — do with me as you think best.
15
But if you kill me, rest assured that you will be killing an innocent man! The responsibility for such a deed will lie on you, on this city, and on every person living in it. For it is absolutely true that the
Lord
sent me to speak every word you have heard.'
16
Then the officials and the people said to the priests and prophets, 'This man does not deserve the death sentence, for he has spoken to us in the name of the
Lord
our God.'
17
Then some of the wise old men stood and spoke to all the people assembled there.
18
They said, 'Remember when Micah of Moresheth prophesied during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah. He told the people of Judah,
‘This is what the
Lord
of Heaven’s Armies says:
Mount Zion will be plowed like an open field;
Jerusalem will be reduced to ruins!
A thicket will grow on the heights
where the Temple now stands.’
19
But did King Hezekiah and the people kill him for saying this? No, they turned from their sins and worshiped the
Lord
. They begged him for mercy. Then the
Lord
changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had pronounced against them. So we are about to do ourselves great harm.'
20
At this time Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim was also prophesying for the
Lord
. And he predicted the same terrible disaster against the city and nation as Jeremiah did.
21
When King Jehoiakim and the army officers and officials heard what he was saying, the king sent someone to kill him. But Uriah heard about the plan and escaped in fear to Egypt.
22
Then King Jehoiakim sent Elnathan son of Acbor to Egypt along with several other men to capture Uriah.
23
They took him prisoner and brought him back to King Jehoiakim. The king then killed Uriah with a sword and had him buried in an unmarked grave.
24
Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan stood up for Jeremiah and persuaded the court not to turn him over to the mob to be killed.
King James Version
1
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the
Lord
, saying,
2
Thus saith the
Lord
; Stand in the court of the
Lord
'S house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the
Lord
'S house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:
3
If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings.
4
And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the
Lord
; If ye will not hearken to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you,
5
To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened;
6
Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.
7
So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the
Lord
.
8
Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the
Lord
had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.
9
Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the
Lord
, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the
Lord
.
10
When the princes of Judah heard these things, then they came up from the king's house unto the house of the
Lord
, and sat down in the entry of the new gate of the
Lord
'S house.
11
Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he hath prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.
12
Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people, saying, The
Lord
sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that ye have heard.
13
Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the
Lord
your God; and the
Lord
will repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you.
14
As for me, behold, I am in your hand: do with me as seemeth good and meet unto you.
15
But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the
Lord
hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears.
16
Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets; This man is not worthy to die: for he hath spoken to us in the name of the
Lord
our God.
17
Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spake to all the assembly of the people, saying,
18
Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the
Lord
of hosts; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.
19
Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the
Lord
, and besought the
Lord
, and the
Lord
repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we procure great evil against our souls.
20
And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the
Lord
, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjathjearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah:
21
And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;
22
And Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, namely, Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain men with him into Egypt.
23
And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.
24
Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
New King James Version
1
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the
Lord
, saying,
2
“Thus says the
Lord
: ‘Stand in the court of the
Lord
’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship
in
the
Lord
’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Do not diminish a word.
3
Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may relent concerning the calamity which I purpose to bring on them because of the evil of their doings.’
4
And you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the
Lord
: “If you will not listen to Me, to walk in My law which I have set before you,
5
to heed the words of My servants the prophets whom I sent to you, both rising up early and sending
them
(but you have not heeded),
6
then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.” ’ ”
7
So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the
Lord
.
8
Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the
Lord
had commanded
him
to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “You will surely die!
9
Why have you prophesied in the name of the
Lord
, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without an inhabitant’?” And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the
Lord
.
10
When the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the
Lord
and sat down in the entry of the New Gate of the
Lord
’s
house.
11
And the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and all the people, saying, “This man deserves to die! For he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”
12
Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and all the people, saying: “The
Lord
sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city with all the words that you have heard.
13
Now therefore, amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the
Lord
your God; then the
Lord
will relent concerning the doom that He has pronounced against you.
14
As for me, here I am, in your hand; do with me as seems good and proper to you.
15
But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for truly the
Lord
has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
16
So the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve to die. For he has spoken to us in the name of the
Lord
our God.”
17
Then certain of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying:
18
“Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, ‘Thus says the
Lord
of hosts:
“Zion shall be plowed
like
a field,
Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins,
And the mountain of the temple
Like the bare hills of the forest.” ’
19
Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah ever put him to death? Did he not fear the
Lord
and seek the
Lord
’s favor? And the
Lord
relented concerning the doom which He had pronounced against them. But we are doing great evil against ourselves.”
20
Now there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the
Lord
, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath Jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.
21
And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Urijah heard
it,
he was afraid and fled, and went to Egypt.
22
Then Jehoiakim the king sent men to Egypt: Elnathan the son of Achbor, and
other
men
who went
with him to Egypt.
23
And they brought Urijah from Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.
24
Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
