Job chapter 1
English Standard Version
1
There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.
2
There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3
He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.
4
His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5
And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, "It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually.
6
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the
Lord
, and Satan also came among them.
7
The
Lord
said to Satan, "From where have you come?" Satan answered the
Lord
and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it."
8
And the
Lord
said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?"
9
Then Satan answered the
Lord
and said, "Does Job fear God for no reason?
10
Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
11
But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face."
12
And the
Lord
said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand." So Satan went out from the presence of the
Lord
.
13
Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother 's house,
14
and there came a messenger to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,
15
and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
16
While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
17
While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
18
While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother 's house,
19
and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
20
Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped.
21
And he said, "Naked I came from my mother 's womb, and naked shall I return. The
Lord
gave, and the
Lord
has taken away; blessed be the name of the
Lord
."
22
In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.
New International Version
1
In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.
2
He had seven sons and three daughters,
3
and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
4
His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5
When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job’s regular custom.
6
One day the angels came to present themselves before the
Lord
, and Satan also came with them.
7
The
Lord
said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the
Lord
, "From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it."
8
Then the
Lord
said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."
9
"Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied.
10
"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.
11
But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."
12
The
Lord
said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the
Lord
.
13
One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,
14
a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,
15
and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
16
While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
17
While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
18
While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house,
19
when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"
20
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship
21
and said:
"Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The
Lord
gave and the
Lord
has taken away;
may the name of the
Lord
be praised."
22
In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Despite all this, Job did not sin, nor did he blame God.
Christian Standard Bible
1
There was a man in the country of Uz named Job. He was a man of complete integrity, who feared God and turned away from evil.
2
He had seven sons and three daughters.
3
His estate included seven thousand sheep and goats, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.
4
His sons used to take turns having banquets at their homes. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5
Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, "Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts." This was Job’s regular practice.
6
One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the
Lord
, and Satan also came with them.
7
The
Lord
asked Satan, "Where have you come from?" "From roaming through the earth," Satan answered him, "and walking around on it."
8
Then the
Lord
said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil."
9
Satan answered the
Lord
, "Does Job fear God for nothing?
10
Haven’t you placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
11
But stretch out your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will surely curse you to your face."
12
"Very well," the
Lord
told Satan, "everything he owns is in your power. However, do not lay a hand on Job himself." So Satan left the
Lord
’s presence.
13
One day when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
14
a messenger came to Job and reported: "While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys grazing nearby,
15
the Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!"
16
He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported: "God’s fire fell from heaven. It burned the sheep and the servants and devoured them, and I alone have escaped to tell you!"
17
That messenger was still speaking when yet another came and reported: "The Chaldeans formed three bands, made a raid on the camels, and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!"
18
He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported: "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house.
19
Suddenly a powerful wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people so that they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you!"
20
Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped,
21
saying:
Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will leave this life.
The
Lord
gives, and the
Lord
takes away.
Blessed be the name of the
Lord
.
22
Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.
New Living Translation
1
There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless — a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil.
2
He had seven sons and three daughters.
3
He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, and 500 female donkeys. He also had many servants. He was, in fact, the richest person in that entire area.
4
Job’s sons would take turns preparing feasts in their homes, and they would also invite their three sisters to celebrate with them.
5
When these celebrations ended — sometimes after several days — Job would purify his children. He would get up early in the morning and offer a burnt offering for each of them. For Job said to himself, 'Perhaps my children have sinned and have cursed God in their hearts.' This was Job’s regular practice.
6
One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the
Lord
, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them.
7
Where have you come from?' the
Lord
asked Satan. Satan answered the
Lord
, 'I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.'
8
Then the
Lord
asked Satan, 'Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless — a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil.'
9
Satan replied to the
Lord
, 'Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God.
10
You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is!
11
But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!'
12
All right, you may test him,' the
Lord
said to Satan. 'Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.' So Satan left the
Lord
’s presence.
13
One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting at the oldest brother’s house,
14
a messenger arrived at Job’s home with this news: 'Your oxen were plowing, with the donkeys feeding beside them,
15
when the Sabeans raided us. They stole all the animals and killed all the farmhands. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.'
16
While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news: 'The fire of God has fallen from heaven and burned up your sheep and all the shepherds. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.'
17
While he was still speaking, a third messenger arrived with this news: 'Three bands of Chaldean raiders have stolen your camels and killed your servants. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.'
18
While he was still speaking, another messenger arrived with this news: 'Your sons and daughters were feasting in their oldest brother’s home.
19
Suddenly, a powerful wind swept in from the wilderness and hit the house on all sides. The house collapsed, and all your children are dead. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.'
20
Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship.
21
He said,
'I came naked from my mother’s womb,
and I will be naked when I leave.
The
Lord
gave me what I had,
and the
Lord
has taken it away.
Praise the name of the
Lord
!'
22
In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God.
King James Version
1
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3
His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4
And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the
Lord
, and Satan came also among them.
7
And the
Lord
said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the
Lord
, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8
And the
Lord
said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9
Then Satan answered the
Lord
, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10
Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12
And the
Lord
said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the
Lord
.
13
And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
14
And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15
And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
19
And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20
Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21
And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the
Lord
gave, and the
Lord
hath taken away; blessed be the name of the
Lord
.
22
In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
