Job chapter 39
English Standard Version
1"Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the does? 2Can you number the months that they fulfill, and do you know the time when they give birth, 3when they crouch, bring forth their offspring, and are delivered of their young? 4Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open; they go out and do not return to them. 5"Who has let the wild donkey go free? Who has loosed the bonds of the swift donkey, 6to whom I have given the arid plain for his home and the salt land for his dwelling place? 7He scorns the tumult of the city; he hears not the shouts of the driver. 8He ranges the mountains as his pasture, and he searches after every green thing. 9"Is the wild ox willing to serve you? Will he spend the night at your manger? 10Can you bind him in the furrow with ropes, or will he harrow the valleys after you? 11Will you depend on him because his strength is great, and will you leave to him your labor? 12Do you have faith in him that he will return your grain and gather it to your threshing floor? 13"The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, but are they the pinions and plumage of love? 14For she leaves her eggs to the earth and lets them be warmed on the ground, 15forgetting that a foot may crush them and that the wild beast may trample them. 16She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers; though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear, 17because God has made her forget wisdom and given her no share in understanding. 18When she rouses herself to flee, she laughs at the horse and his rider. 19"Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? 20Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrifying. 21He paws in the valley and exults in his strength; he goes out to meet the weapons. 22He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; he does not turn back from the sword. 23Upon him rattle the quiver, the flashing spear, and the javelin. 24With fierceness and rage he swallows the ground; he cannot stand still at the sound of the trumpet. 25When the trumpet sounds, he says ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle from afar, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. 26"Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars and spreads his wings toward the south? 27Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up and makes his nest on high? 28On the rock he dwells and makes his home, on the rocky crag and stronghold. 29From there he spies out the prey; his eyes behold it from far away. 30His young ones suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is he."
New International Version
1"Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn? 2Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth? 3They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended.
4Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return. 5"Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied its ropes? 6I gave it the wasteland as its home, the salt flats as its habitat. 7It laughs at the commotion in the town; it does not hear a driver’s shout.
8It ranges the hills for its pasture and searches for any green thing. 9"Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will it stay by your manger at night? 10Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness? Will it till the valleys behind you? 11Will you rely on it for its great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to it?
12Can you trust it to haul in your grain and bring it to your threshing floor? 13"The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, though they cannot compare with the wings and feathers of the stork. 14She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand, 15unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them. 16She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain, 17for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense.
18Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider. 19"Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? 20Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? 21It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. 22It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. 23The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. 24In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
25At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’ It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry. 26"Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south? 27Does the eagle soar at your command and build its nest on high? 28It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is its stronghold. 29From there it looks for food; its eyes detect it from afar. 30Its young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there it is."
New American Standard Bible
1'Do you know the time the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the deer? 2Can you count the months they fulfill, Or do you know the time they give birth? 3They kneel down, they deliver their young, They get rid of their labor pains. 4Their offspring become strong, they grow up in the open field; They leave and do not return to them. 5'Who sent the wild donkey out free? And who opened the bonds of the swift donkey, 6To whom I gave the wilderness as his home, And the salt land as his dwelling place? 7He laughs at the turmoil of the city, He does not hear the shouting of the taskmaster. 8He explores the mountains of his pasture, And searches after every green thing. 9Will the wild bull be willing to serve you, Or will he spend the night at your feeding trough? 10Can you tie down the wild bull in a furrow with ropes, Or will he plow the valleys after you? 11Will you trust him because his strength is great, And leave your labor to him? 12Will you have faith in him that he will return your grain And gather it from your threshing floor? 13'The wings of the ostrich flap joyously, With the pinion and feathers of love, 14For she abandons her eggs to the earth And warms them in the dust, 15And she forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a wild animal may trample them. 16She treats her young cruelly, as if they were not hers; Though her labor is for nothing, she is unconcerned, 17Because God has made her forget wisdom, And has not given her a share of understanding. 18When she rushes away on high, She laughs at the horse and his rider. 19'Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? 20Do you make him leap like locusts? His majestic snorting is frightening. 21 He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He goes out to meet the battle. 22He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; And he does not turn back from the sword. 23The quiver rattles against him, The flashing spear and javelin. 24He races over the ground with a roar and fury, And he does not stand still when he hears the sound of the trumpet. 25As often as the trumpet sounds he says, ‘Aha!’ And he senses the battle from afar, And the thunder of the captains and the war cry. 26'Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars, Stretching his wings toward the south? 27Is it at your command that the eagle flies high, And makes his nest on high? 28He dwells and spends his nights on the cliff, On the rocky cliff, an inaccessible place. 29From there he tracks food; His eyes look at it from afar. 30His young ones also lick up blood greedily; And where the slain are, there he is.'
Christian Standard Bible
1Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you watched the deer in labor? 2Can you count the months they are pregnant so you can know the time they give birth? 3They crouch down to give birth to their young; they deliver their newborn.
4Their offspring are healthy and grow up in the open field. They leave and do not return. 5Who set the wild donkey free? Who released the swift donkey from its harness? 6I made the desert its home, and the salty wasteland its dwelling. 7It scoffs at the noise of the village and never hears the shouts of a driver. 8It roams the mountains for its pastureland, searching for anything green. 9Would the wild ox be willing to serve you? Would it spend the night by your feeding trough? 10Can you hold the wild ox to a furrow by its harness? Will it plow the valleys behind you? 11Can you depend on it because its strength is great? Would you leave it to do your hard work?
12Can you trust the wild ox to harvest your grain and bring it to your threshing floor? 13The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but are her feathers and plumage like the stork’s? 14She abandons her eggs on the ground and lets them be warmed in the sand. 15She forgets that a foot may crush them or that some wild animal may trample them. 16She treats her young harshly, as if they were not her own, with no fear that her labor may have been in vain. 17For God has deprived her of wisdom; he has not endowed her with understanding.
18When she proudly spreads her wings, she laughs at the horse and its rider. 19Do you give strength to the horse? Do you adorn his neck with a mane? 20Do you make him leap like a locust? His proud snorting fills one with terror. 21He paws in the valley and rejoices in his strength; he charges into battle. 22He laughs at fear, since he is afraid of nothing; he does not run from the sword. 23A quiver rattles at his side, along with a flashing spear and a javelin. 24He charges ahead with trembling rage; he cannot stand still at the trumpet’s sound.
25When the trumpet blasts, he snorts defiantly. He smells the battle from a distance; he hears the officers’ shouts and the battle cry. 26Does the hawk take flight by your understanding and spread its wings to the south? 27Does the eagle soar at your command and make its nest on high? 28It lives on a cliff where it spends the night; its stronghold is on a rocky crag. 29From there it searches for prey; its eyes penetrate the distance. 30Its brood gulps down blood, and where the slain are, it is there.
New Living Translation
1'Do you know when the wild goats give birth? Have you watched as deer are born in the wild? 2Do you know how many months they carry their young? Are you aware of the time of their delivery? 3They crouch down to give birth to their young and deliver their offspring. 4Their young grow up in the open fields, then leave home and never return.
5'Who gives the wild donkey its freedom? Who untied its ropes? 6I have placed it in the wilderness; its home is the wasteland. 7It hates the noise of the city and has no driver to shout at it. 8The mountains are its pastureland, where it searches for every blade of grass.
9'Will the wild ox consent to being tamed? Will it spend the night in your stall? 10Can you hitch a wild ox to a plow? Will it plow a field for you? 11Given its strength, can you trust it? Can you leave and trust the ox to do your work? 12Can you rely on it to bring home your grain and deliver it to your threshing floor?
13'The ostrich flaps her wings grandly, but they are no match for the feathers of the stork. 14She lays her eggs on top of the earth, letting them be warmed in the dust. 15She doesn’t worry that a foot might crush them or a wild animal might destroy them. 16She is harsh toward her young, as if they were not her own. She doesn’t care if they die. 17For God has deprived her of wisdom. He has given her no understanding. 18But whenever she jumps up to run, she passes the swiftest horse with its rider.
19'Have you given the horse its strength or clothed its neck with a flowing mane? 20Did you give it the ability to leap like a locust? Its majestic snorting is terrifying! 21It paws the earth and rejoices in its strength when it charges out to battle. 22It laughs at fear and is unafraid. It does not run from the sword. 23The arrows rattle against it, and the spear and javelin flash. 24It paws the ground fiercely and rushes forward into battle when the ram’s horn blows. 25It snorts at the sound of the horn. It senses the battle in the distance. It quivers at the captain’s commands and the noise of battle.
26'Is it your wisdom that makes the hawk soar and spread its wings toward the south? 27Is it at your command that the eagle rises to the heights to make its nest? 28It lives on the cliffs, making its home on a distant, rocky crag. 29From there it hunts its prey, keeping watch with piercing eyes. 30Its young gulp down blood. Where there’s a carcass, there you’ll find it.'
King James Version
New King James Version
1“Do you know the time when the wild mountain goats bear young? Or can you mark when the deer gives birth? 2Can you number the months that they fulfill? Or do you know the time when they bear young? 3They bow down, They bring forth their young, They deliver their offspring. 4Their young ones are healthy, They grow strong with grain; They depart and do not return to them. 5“Who set the wild donkey free? Who loosed the bonds of the onager, 6 Whose home I have made the wilderness, And the barren land his dwelling? 7He scorns the tumult of the city; He does not heed the shouts of the driver. 8The range of the mountains is his pasture, And he searches after every green thing. 9“Will the wild ox be willing to serve you? Will he bed by your manger? 10Can you bind the wild ox in the furrow with ropes? Or will he plow the valleys behind you? 11Will you trust him because his strength is great? Or will you leave your labor to him? 12Will you trust him to bring home your grain, And gather it to your threshing floor? 13“The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, But are her wings and pinions like the kindly stork’s? 14For she leaves her eggs on the ground, And warms them in the dust; 15She forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a wild beast may break them. 16She treats her young harshly, as though they were not hers; Her labor is in vain, without concern, 17Because God deprived her of wisdom, And did not endow her with understanding. 18When she lifts herself on high, She scorns the horse and its rider. 19“Have you given the horse strength? Have you clothed his neck with thunder? 20Can you frighten him like a locust? His majestic snorting strikes terror. 21He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He gallops into the clash of arms. 22He mocks at fear, and is not frightened; Nor does he turn back from the sword. 23The quiver rattles against him, The glittering spear and javelin. 24He devours the distance with fierceness and rage; Nor does he come to a halt because the trumpet has sounded. 25At the blast of the trumpet he says, ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle from afar, The thunder of captains and shouting. 26“Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, And spread its wings toward the south? 27Does the eagle mount up at your command, And make its nest on high? 28On the rock it dwells and resides, On the crag of the rock and the stronghold. 29From there it spies out the prey; Its eyes observe from afar. 30Its young ones suck up blood; And where the slain are, there it is.”
