Jonah chapter 1

English Standard Version

1Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2"Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me." 3But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
4But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. 5Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6So the captain came and said to him, "What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish."
7And they said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8Then they said to him, "Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?" 9And he said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land." 10Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, "What is this that you have done!" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
11Then they said to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?" For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12He said to them, "Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you." 13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14Therefore they called out to the Lord, "O Lord, let us not perish for this man 's life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you." 15So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.
17And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

1The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2"Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me."
3But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
4Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish."
7Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"
9He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."
10This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"
12"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."
13Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14Then they cried out to the Lord, "Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased." 15Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.
17Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

But Jonah had gone below into the stern of the ship, had lain down, and fallen sound asleep. 6So the captain approached him and said, 'How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.'
7And each man said to his mate, 'Come, let’s cast lots so that we may find out on whose account this catastrophe has struck us.' So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8Then they said to him, 'Tell us, now! On whose account has this catastrophe struck us? What is your occupation, and where do you come from? What is your country, and from what people are you?' 9So he said to them, 'I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land.'
10Then the men became extremely afraid, and they said to him, 'How could you do this?' For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11So they said to him, 'What should we do to you so that the sea will become calm for us?'—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12And he said to them, 'Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.' 13However, the men rowed desperately to return to land, but they could not, because the sea was becoming even stormier against them. 14Then they cried out to the Lord and said, 'We earnestly pray, O Lord, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life, and do not put innocent blood on us; for You, Lord, have done as You pleased.'
15So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. 16Then the men became extremely afraid of the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.
17And the Lord designated a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.

4But the Lord threw a great wind onto the sea, and such a great storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart. 5The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god. They threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep.
6The captain approached him and said, "What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god. Maybe this god will consider us, and we won’t perish."
7"Come on!" the sailors said to each other. "Let’s cast lots. Then we’ll know who is to blame for this trouble we’re in." So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah. 8Then they said to him, "Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from?"
9He answered them, "I’m a Hebrew. I worship the Lord, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land."
10Then the men were seized by a great fear and said to him, "What is this you’ve done?" The men knew he was fleeing from the Lord’s presence because he had told them. 11So they said to him, "What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us?" For the sea was getting worse and worse.
12He answered them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea so that it will calm down for you, for I know that I’m to blame for this great storm that is against you." 13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn’t because the sea was raging against them more and more.
14So they called out to the Lord: "Please, Lord, don’t let us perish because of this man’s life, and don’t charge us with innocent blood! For you, Lord, have done just as you pleased." 15Then they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. 16The men were seized by great fear of the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.
17The Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
New Living Translation

1The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: 2Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.'
3But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
4But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart.
5Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold. 6So the captain went down after him. 'How can you sleep at a time like this?' he shouted. 'Get up and pray to your god! Maybe he will pay attention to us and spare our lives.'
7Then the crew cast lots to see which of them had offended the gods and caused the terrible storm. When they did this, the lots identified Jonah as the culprit. 8Why has this awful storm come down on us?' they demanded. 'Who are you? What is your line of work? What country are you from? What is your nationality?'
9Jonah answered, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.'
10The sailors were terrified when they heard this, for he had already told them he was running away from the Lord. 'Oh, why did you do it?' they groaned. 11And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, 'What should we do to you to stop this storm?'
12Throw me into the sea,' Jonah said, 'and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.'
13Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it. 14Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God. 'O Lord,' they pleaded, 'don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.'
15Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once! 16The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve him.
17Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.

For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. 12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. 13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. 14Wherefore they cried unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee. 15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. 16Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows. 17Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

17Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
