What does Matthew 13:53 mean?
Matthew concludes his description of Jesus' teaching of the parables first to a large crowd gathered on the shore of the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 13:1–2) and then to His own disciples gathered in a house (Matthew 13:36). After Jesus had finished, He went away, likely meaning he left Capernaum, Jesus' adopted hometown. Matthew wrote earlier that Jesus left His original hometown of Nazareth to move to "Capernaum by the sea" (Matthew 4:13) and also that Capernaum had become Jesus' "own city" (Matthew 9:1).The following verses describe what happened when Jesus returned to visit His original hometown of Nazareth. An English proverb is that "familiarity breeds contempt," and this is exactly what Christ experiences among those who think they already know Him.
