Zechariah chapter 5
English Standard Version
1
Again I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a flying scroll!
2
And he said to me, "What do you see?" I answered, "I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits."
3
Then he said to me, "This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. For everyone who steals shall be cleaned out according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely shall be cleaned out according to what is on the other side.
4
I will send it out, declares the
Lord
of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones."
5
Then the angel who talked with me came forward and said to me, "Lift your eyes and see what this is that is going out."
6
And I said, "What is it?" He said, "This is the basket that is going out." And he said, "This is their iniquity in all the land."
7
And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket!
8
And he said, "This is Wickedness." And he thrust her back into the basket, and thrust down the leaden weight on its opening.
9
Then I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, two women coming forward! The wind was in their wings. They had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven.
10
Then I said to the angel who talked with me, "Where are they taking the basket?"
11
He said to me, "To the land of Shinar, to build a house for it. And when this is prepared, they will set the basket down there on its base."
New International Version
1
I looked again, and there before me was a flying scroll.
2
He asked me, "What do you see?" I answered, "I see a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide. "
3
And he said to me, "This is the curse that is going out over the whole land; for according to what it says on one side, every thief will be banished, and according to what it says on the other, everyone who swears falsely will be banished.
4
The
Lord
Almighty declares, ‘I will send it out, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of anyone who swears falsely by my name. It will remain in that house and destroy it completely, both its timbers and its stones.’ "
5
Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward and said to me, "Look up and see what is appearing."
6
I asked, "What is it?" He replied, "It is a basket." And he added, "This is the iniquity of the people throughout the land."
7
Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman!
8
He said, "This is wickedness," and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed its lead cover down on it.
9
Then I looked up—and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth.
10
"Where are they taking the basket?" I asked the angel who was speaking to me.
11
He replied, "To the country of Babylonia to build a house for it. When the house is ready, the basket will be set there in its place."
New American Standard Bible
1
Then I raised my eyes again and looked, and behold,
there was
a flying scroll.
2
And he said to me, 'What do you see?' And I said, 'I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.'
3
Then he said to me, 'This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the entire land; everyone who steals certainly will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears
falsely
will be purged away according to the writing on the other side.
4
I will make it go forth,' declares the
Lord
of armies, 'and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and destroy it with its timber and stones.'
5
Then the angel who had been speaking with me went out and said to me, 'Now raise your eyes and see what this is that is going forth.'
6
And I said, 'What is it?' Then he said, 'This is the ephah going forth.' Again he said, 'This is their appearance in all the land.
7
And behold, a lead cover was lifted up.'
He continued,
'And this is a woman sitting inside the ephah.'
8
Then he said, 'This is Wickedness!' And he thrust her into the middle of the ephah and threw the lead weight on its opening.
9
Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there two women were coming out with the wind in their wings; and they had wings like the wings of the stork, and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heavens.
10
So I said to the angel who was speaking with me, 'Where are they taking the ephah?'
11
Then he said to me, 'To build a temple for her in the land of Shinar; and when it is prepared, she will be set there on her own pedestal.'
Christian Standard Bible
1
I looked up again and saw a flying scroll.
2
"What do you see?" he asked me. "I see a flying scroll," I replied, "thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide."
3
Then he said to me, "This is the curse that is going out over the whole land, for everyone who is a thief, contrary to what is written on one side, has gone unpunished, and everyone who swears falsely, contrary to what is written on the other side, has gone unpunished.
4
I will send it out," —this is the declaration of the
Lord
of Armies—"and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by my name. It will stay inside his house and destroy it along with its timbers and stones."
5
Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me, "Look up and see what this is that is approaching."
6
So I asked, "What is it?" He responded, "It’s a measuring basket that is approaching." And he continued, "This is their iniquity in all the land."
7
Then a lead cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting inside the basket.
8
"This is Wickedness," he said. He shoved her down into the basket and pushed the lead weight over its opening.
9
Then I looked up and saw two women approaching with the wind in their wings. Their wings were like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and sky.
10
So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, "Where are they taking the basket?"
11
"To build a shrine for it in the land of Shinar," he told me. "When that is ready, the basket will be placed there on its pedestal."
New Living Translation
1
I looked up again and saw a scroll flying through the air.
2
What do you see?' the angel asked. 'I see a flying scroll,' I replied. 'It appears to be about 30 feet long and 15 feet wide. '
3
Then he said to me, 'This scroll contains the curse that is going out over the entire land. One side of the scroll says that those who steal will be banished from the land; the other side says that those who swear falsely will be banished from the land.
4
And this is what the
Lord
of Heaven’s Armies says: I am sending this curse into the house of every thief and into the house of everyone who swears falsely using my name. And my curse will remain in that house and completely destroy it — even its timbers and stones.'
5
Then the angel who was talking with me came forward and said, 'Look up and see what’s coming.'
6
What is it?' I asked. He replied, 'It is a basket for measuring grain, and it’s filled with the sins of everyone throughout the land.'
7
Then the heavy lead cover was lifted off the basket, and there was a woman sitting inside it.
8
The angel said, 'The woman’s name is Wickedness,' and he pushed her back into the basket and closed the heavy lid again.
9
Then I looked up and saw two women flying toward us, gliding on the wind. They had wings like a stork, and they picked up the basket and flew into the sky.
10
Where are they taking the basket?' I asked the angel.
11
He replied, 'To the land of Babylonia, where they will build a temple for the basket. And when the temple is ready, they will set the basket there on its pedestal.'
King James Version
1
Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
2
And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
3
Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.
4
I will bring it forth, saith the
Lord
of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.
5
Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.
6
And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.
7
And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.
8
And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.
9
Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
10
Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?
11
And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.
New King James Version
1
Then I turned and raised my eyes, and saw there a flying scroll.
2
And he said to me, “What do you see?” So I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length
is
twenty cubits and its width ten cubits.”
3
Then he said to me, “This
is
the curse that goes out over the face of the whole earth: ‘Every thief shall be expelled,’ according
to
this side of
the scroll;
and, ‘Every perjurer shall be expelled,’ according
to
that side of it.”
4
“I will send out
the curse,
” says the
Lord
of hosts;
“It shall enter the house of the thief
And the house of the one who swears falsely by My name.
It shall remain in the midst of his house
And consume it, with its timber and stones.”
5
Then the angel who talked with me came out and said to me, “Lift your eyes now, and see what this
is
that goes forth.”
6
So I asked, “What
is
it?” And he said, “It
is
a basket that is going forth.” He also said, “This
is
their resemblance throughout the earth:
7
Here
is
a lead disc lifted up, and this
is
a woman sitting inside the basket”;
8
then he said, “This
is
Wickedness!” And he thrust her down into the basket, and threw the lead cover over its mouth.
9
Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there
were
two women, coming with the wind in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between earth and heaven.
10
So I said to the angel who talked with me, “Where are they carrying the basket?”
11
And he said to me, “To build a house for it in the land of Shinar; when it is ready,
the basket
will be set there on its base.”
