1 Chronicles 11:17-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
17
And David had a craving and said, 'Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!'
18
So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which
was
by the gate, and took
it
and brought
it
to David; however, David would not drink it, but poured it out to the
Lord
;
19
and he said, 'Far be it from me before my God that I would do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men
who went
at the risk of their lives? For they brought it at the risk of their lives.' Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.
20
As for Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the thirty, and he wielded his spear against three hundred and killed them; and he had a name as well as the thirty.
King James Version
Chapter 11
17
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
18
And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the
Lord
,
19
And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
20
And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
17
David was extremely thirsty and said, "If only someone would bring me water to drink from the well at the city gate of Bethlehem!"
18
So the Three broke through the Philistine camp and drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem. They brought it back to David, but he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out to the
Lord
.
19
David said, "I would never do such a thing in the presence of my God! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?" For they brought it at the risk of their lives. So he would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three warriors.
20
Abishai, Joab’s brother, was the leader of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men and killed them, gaining a reputation among the Three.
New Living Translation

17
David remarked longingly to his men, 'Oh, how I would love some of that good water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem.'
18
So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew some water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But David refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the
Lord
.
19
God forbid that I should drink this!' he exclaimed. 'This water is as precious as the blood of these men who risked their lives to bring it to me.' So David did not drink it. These are examples of the exploits of the Three.
20
Abishai, the brother of Joab, was the leader of the Thirty. He once used his spear to kill 300 enemy warriors in a single battle. It was by such feats that he became as famous as the Three.
English Standard Version
