1 Chronicles 11:4-8
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
4
Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land,
were
there.
5
The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, 'You shall not enter here.' Nevertheless David took the mountain stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).
6
Now David had said, 'Whoever is first to kill a Jebusite shall be chief and commander.' Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.
7
Then David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.
8
He built the city all around, from the Millo to the surrounding area; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.
King James Version
Chapter 11
4
And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.
5
And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David.
6
And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.
7
And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.
8
And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
4
David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); the Jebusites who inhabited the land were there.
5
The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will never get in here." Yet David did capture the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.
6
David said, "Whoever is the first to kill a Jebusite will become chief commander." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became the chief.
7
Then David took up residence in the stronghold; therefore, it was called the city of David.
8
He built up the city all the way around, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding parts, and Joab restored the rest of the city.
New Living Translation
Chapter 11
4
Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (or Jebus, as it used to be called), where the Jebusites, the original inhabitants of the land, were living.
5
The people of Jebus taunted David, saying, 'You’ll never get in here!' But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now called the City of David.
6
David had said to his troops, 'Whoever is first to attack the Jebusites will become the commander of my armies!' And Joab, the son of David’s sister Zeruiah, was first to attack, so he became the commander of David’s armies.
7
David made the fortress his home, and that is why it is called the City of David.
8
He extended the city from the supporting terraces to the surrounding area, while Joab rebuilt the rest of Jerusalem.
English Standard Version

7
And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.
8
And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city.
