Chapter 11

5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, 'You shall not enter here.' Nevertheless David took the mountain stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David). 6Now David had said, 'Whoever is first to kill a Jebusite shall be chief and commander.' Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. 7Then David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. 8He built the city all around, from the Millo to the surrounding area; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

Chapter 11

5And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David. 6And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. 7And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David. 8And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

Chapter 11

5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will never get in here." Yet David did capture the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.
6David said, "Whoever is the first to kill a Jebusite will become chief commander." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became the chief.
7Then David took up residence in the stronghold; therefore, it was called the city of David. 8He built up the city all the way around, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding parts, and Joab restored the rest of the city.

Chapter 11

5The people of Jebus taunted David, saying, 'You’ll never get in here!' But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now called the City of David.
6David had said to his troops, 'Whoever is first to attack the Jebusites will become the commander of my armies!' And Joab, the son of David’s sister Zeruiah, was first to attack, so he became the commander of David’s armies.
7David made the fortress his home, and that is why it is called the City of David. 8He extended the city from the supporting terraces to the surrounding area, while Joab rebuilt the rest of Jerusalem.

And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. 7And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. 8And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

5said to David, "You will not get in here." Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6David had said, "Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.
