1 Chronicles 21:1-5
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 21
1
Then Satan stood up against Israel and incited David to count Israel.
2
So David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, 'Go, count Israel from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me
word
so that I may know their number.'
3
But Joab said, 'May the
Lord
add to His people a hundred times as many as they are! My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord seek this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt to Israel?'
4
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore, Joab departed and went throughout Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5
Then Joab gave the number of the census of the people to David. Israel was 1,100,000 men in all who drew the sword; and Judah
was
470,000 men who drew the sword.
King James Version
Chapter 21
1
And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
2
And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3
And Joab answered, The
Lord
make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
4
Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5
And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

Chapter 21
1
Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to count the people of Israel.
2
So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, "Go and count Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan and bring a report to me so I can know their number."
3
Joab replied, "May the
Lord
multiply the number of his people a hundred times over! My lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?"
4
Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab. So Joab left and traveled throughout Israel and then returned to Jerusalem.
5
Joab gave the total troop registration to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand armed men and in Judah itself four hundred seventy thousand armed men.
New Living Translation
Chapter 21
1
Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel.
2
So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, 'Take a census of all the people of Israel — from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north — and bring me a report so I may know how many there are.'
3
But Joab replied, 'May the
Lord
increase the number of his people a hundred times over! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this? Are they not all your servants? Why must you cause Israel to sin?'
4
But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab traveled throughout all Israel to count the people. Then he returned to Jerusalem
5
and reported the number of people to David. There were 1,100,000 warriors in all Israel who could handle a sword, and 470,000 in Judah.
