1 John 3:9-22
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
9No one who has been born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God. 10By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother and sister.
11For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we are to love one another;
12not as Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And for what reason did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.
13Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.
15Everyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.
16We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.
17But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?
18Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
19We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him,
20that if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things.
21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
22and whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.
King James Version
Chapter 3
9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Chapter 3
9Everyone who has been born of God does not sin, because his seed remains in him; he is not able to sin, because he has been born of God. 10This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother or sister.
11For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another,
12unlike Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.
13Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
14We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.
15Everyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17If anyone has this world’s goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from him—how does God’s love reside in him?
18Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
9Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. 10So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.
11This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
12We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous.
13So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
14If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.
15Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.
16We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion — how can God’s love be in that person?
English Standard Version
Chapter 3
9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God 's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
11For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother 's righteous.
13Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.
14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.
15Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
17But if anyone has the world 's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God 's love abide in him?
18Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
19By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;
20for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
22and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

Chapter 3
9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
11For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.
13Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
15Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
18Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence:
20If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God
22and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.
New King James Version
10In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.
