1 John 4:8-19
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
8The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9By this the love of God was revealed in us, that God has sent His only Son into the world so that we may live through Him. 10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13By this we know that we remain in Him and He in us, because He has given to us of His Spirit. 14We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.
16We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
17By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, we also are in this world.
18There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
19We love, because He first loved us.
King James Version
Chapter 4
8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19We love him, because he first loved us.

Chapter 4
8The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another. 12No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us and his love is made complete in us. 13This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent his Son as the world’s Savior. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God.
16And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
17In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as he is, so also are we in this world.
18There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears is not complete in love.
19We love because he first loved us.
New Living Translation
9God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.
10This is real love — not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
11Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.
12No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.
13And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.
14Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
15All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God.
16We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.
17And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.

Chapter 4
8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
13By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
16So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
17By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.
18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
19We love because he first loved us.
New International Version
Chapter 4
8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
13This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.
14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
15If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.
16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
17This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.
18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
