1 Kings 13:6-21
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 13
6And the king responded and said to the man of God, 'Please appease the Lord your God and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored to me.' So the man of God appeased the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and it became as it was before. 7Then the king said to the man of God, 'Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a gift.' 8But the man of God said to the king, 'If you were to give me half your house, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place. 9For so it was commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall not eat bread nor drink water, nor return by the way that you came.’?' 10So he went another way and did not return by the way that he had come to Bethel.
11Now an old prophet was living in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the deeds which the man of God had done that day in Bethel; the words which he had spoken to the king, these also they reported to their father.
12And their father said to them, 'Which way did he go?' Now his sons had seen the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone.
13Then he said to his sons, 'Saddle the donkey for me.' So they saddled the donkey for him and he rode away on it.
14So he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak; and he said to him, 'Are you the man of God who came from Judah?' And he said, 'I am.'
15Then he said to him, 'Come home with me and eat bread.'
16But he said, 'I cannot return with you, nor come with you, nor will I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
17For a command came to me by the word of the Lord: ‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink water there; do not return by going the way that you came.’?'
18Then he said to him, 'I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’?' But he lied to him.
19So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house and drank water.
20Now it came about, as they were sitting down at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back;
21and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, 'This is what the Lord says: ‘Because you have disobeyed the command of the Lord, and have not kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you,

Chapter 13
6And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. 7And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 8And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: 9For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. 10So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.
11Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
12And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
13And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,
14And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
15Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
16And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
17For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
18He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
19So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
20And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back:
21And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

8But the man of God replied, "If you were to give me half your house, I still wouldn’t go with you, and I wouldn’t eat food or drink water in this place,
9for this is what I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat food or drink water or go back the way you came.’"
10So he went another way; he did not go back by the way he had come to Bethel.
11Now a certain old prophet was living in Bethel. His son came and told him all the deeds that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. His sons also told their father the words that he had spoken to the king.
12Then their father asked them, "Which way did he go?" His sons had seen the way taken by the man of God who had come from Judah.
13Then he said to his sons, "Saddle the donkey for me." So they saddled the donkey for him, and he got on it.
16But he answered, "I cannot go back with you or accompany you; I will not eat food or drink water with you in this place.
17For a message came to me by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat food or drink water there or go back by the way you came.’"
18He said to him, "I am also a prophet like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat food and drink water.’" The old prophet deceived him,
19and the man of God went back with him, ate food in his house, and drank water.
20While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back,
21and the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, "This is what the Lord says: ‘Because you rebelled against the Lord’s command and did not keep the command that the Lord your God commanded you—
New Living Translation
8But the man of God said to the king, 'Even if you gave me half of everything you own, I would not go with you. I would not eat or drink anything in this place.
9For the Lord gave me this command: ‘You must not eat or drink anything while you are there, and do not return to Judah by the same way you came.’'
10So he left Bethel and went home another way.
11As it happened, there was an old prophet living in Bethel, and his sons came home and told him what the man of God had done in Bethel that day. They also told their father what the man had said to the king.
12The old prophet asked them, 'Which way did he go?' So they showed their father which road the man of God had taken.
13Quick, saddle the donkey,' the old man said. So they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted it.
16No, I cannot,' he replied. 'I am not allowed to eat or drink anything here in this place.
17For the Lord gave me this command: ‘You must not eat or drink anything while you are there, and do not return to Judah by the same way you came.’'
18But the old prophet answered, 'I am a prophet, too, just as you are. And an angel gave me this command from the Lord: ‘Bring him home with you so he can have something to eat and drink.’' But the old man was lying to him.
19So they went back together, and the man of God ate and drank at the prophet’s home.
