Chapter 9

that the
Lord
appeared to Solomon a second time, as He had appeared to him at Gibeon.
3
And the
Lord
said to him, 'I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have offered before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built, by putting My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there always.
4
As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and honesty, acting in accordance with everything that I have commanded you,
and if
you keep My statutes and My ordinances,
5
then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, just as I promised to your father David, saying, ‘ You shall not be deprived of a man on the throne of Israel.’
6
But if you or your sons indeed turn away from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have placed before you, but you go and serve other gods and worship them,
7
then I will cut Israel off from the land which I have given them, and the house which I have consecrated for My name, I will expel from My sight. So Israel will become a saying and an object of derision among all peoples.
8
And this house will become a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and hiss and say, ‘Why has the
Lord
done such a thing to this land and this house?’
9
And they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the
Lord
their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they adopted other gods and worshiped and served them, for that reason the
Lord
has brought all this adversity on them.’?'
10
Now it came about at the end of twenty years in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the
Lord
and the king’s house

3
And the
Lord
said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
4
And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:
5
Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.
6
But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them:
7
Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:
8
And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the
Lord
done thus unto this land, and to this house?
9
And they shall answer, Because they forsook the
Lord
their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the
Lord
brought upon them all this evil.

As for you, if you walk before me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and in what is right, doing everything I have commanded you, and if you keep my statutes and ordinances,

If you or your sons turn away from following me and do not keep my commands—my statutes that I have set before you—and if you go and serve other gods and bow in worship to them,

I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them, and I will reject the temple I have sanctified for my name. Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples.
8
Though this temple is now exalted, everyone who passes by will be appalled and will scoff. They will say: Why did the
Lord
do this to this land and this temple?
9
Then they will say: Because they abandoned the
Lord
their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They held on to other gods and bowed in worship to them and served them. Because of this, the
Lord
brought all this ruin on them.

The
Lord

'I have heard your prayer and your petition. I have set this Temple apart to be holy — this place you have built where my name will be honored forever. I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my heart.
4
'As for you, if you will follow me with integrity and godliness, as David your father did, obeying all my commands, decrees, and regulations,
5
then I will establish the throne of your dynasty over Israel forever. For I made this promise to your father, David: ‘One of your descendants will always sit on the throne of Israel.’
6
'But if you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the commands and decrees I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods,
7
then I will uproot Israel from this land that I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have made holy to honor my name. I will make Israel an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations.
8
And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled and will gasp in horror. They will ask, ‘Why did the
Lord
do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?’
9
'And the answer will be, ‘Because his people abandoned the
Lord
their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why the
Lord
has brought all these disasters on them.’'
