Chapter 14

35And Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar that he built to the Lord.
36Then Saul said, 'Let’s go down after the Philistines by night and take plunder among them until the morning light, and let’s not leave a man among them alive.' And they said, 'Do whatever seems good to you.' So the priest said, 'Let’s approach God here.' 37So Saul inquired of God: 'Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You hand them over to Israel?' But He did not answer him on that day. 38Then Saul said, 'Come here, all you leaders of the people, and investigate and see how this sin has happened today. 39For as the Lord lives, who saves Israel, even if it is in my son Jonathan, he shall assuredly die!' But not one of all the people answered him. 40Then he said to all Israel, 'You shall be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side.' And the people said to Saul, 'Do what seems good to you.'

35And Saul built an altar unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built unto the Lord. 36And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God. 37And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.
38And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day. 39For, as the Lord liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
40Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

36Saul said, "Let’s go down after the Philistines tonight and plunder them until morning. Don’t let even one remain!" "Do whatever you want," the troops replied. But the priest said, "Let’s approach God here."
37So Saul inquired of God, "Should I go after the Philistines? Will you hand them over to Israel?" But God did not answer him that day.
38Saul said, "All you leaders of the troops, come here. Let us investigate how this sin has occurred today. 39As surely as the Lord lives who saves Israel, even if it is because of my son Jonathan, he must die!" Not one of the troops answered him.
40So he said to all Israel, "You will be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side." And the troops replied, "Do whatever you want."

35Then Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first of the altars he built to the Lord.
36Then Saul said, 'Let’s chase the Philistines all night and plunder them until sunrise. Let’s destroy every last one of them.' His men replied, 'We’ll do whatever you think is best.' But the priest said, 'Let’s ask God first.'
37So Saul asked God, 'Should we go after the Philistines? Will you help us defeat them?' But God made no reply that day.
38Then Saul said to the leaders, 'Something’s wrong! I want all my army commanders to come here. We must find out what sin was committed today. 39I vow by the name of the Lord who rescued Israel that the sinner will surely die, even if it is my own son Jonathan!' But no one would tell him what the trouble was.
40Then Saul said, 'Jonathan and I will stand over here, and all of you stand over there.' And the people responded to Saul, 'Whatever you think is best.'

37So Saul asked God, "Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?" But God did not answer him that day.
38Saul therefore said, "Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today. 39As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives, even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan, he must die." But not one of them said a word.
40Saul then said to all the Israelites, "You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here." "Do what seems best to you," they replied.
