Chapter 3

1Now the boy Samuel was attending to the service of the Lord before Eli. And word from the Lord was rare in those days; visions were infrequent.
2But it happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to be poor and he could not see well), 3and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, 4that the Lord called Samuel; and he said, 'Here I am.' 5Then he ran to Eli and said, 'Here I am, for you called me.' But he said, 'I did not call, go back and lie down.' So he went and lay down.

1And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
2And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; 3And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 4That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. 5And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

1The boy Samuel served the Lord in Eli’s presence. In those days the word of the Lord was rare and prophetic visions were not widespread.
2One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing, was lying in his usual place. 3Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was located.
4Then the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, "Here I am."
5He ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "I didn’t call," Eli replied. "Go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

1Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served the Lord by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.
2One night Eli, who was almost blind by now, had gone to bed. 3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle near the Ark of God.
4Suddenly the Lord called out, 'Samuel!' 'Yes?' Samuel replied. 'What is it?'
5He got up and ran to Eli. 'Here I am. Did you call me?' 'I didn’t call you,' Eli replied. 'Go back to bed.' So he did.
