2 Kings 2:5-15
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 2
5Then the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, 'Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?' And he answered, 'Yes, I know; say nothing about it.' 6And Elijah said to him, 'Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.' But he said, 'As surely as the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.' So the two of them went on.
7Now fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.
8And Elijah took his coat, folded it, and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
9When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask me what I should do for you before I am taken from you.' And Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.'
10He said, 'You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.'
11And as they were walking along and talking, behold, a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and they separated the two of them. Then Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.
12And Elisha was watching it and he was crying out, 'My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!' And he did not see Elijah again. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.
13He also took up the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him, and he went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.
14Then he took the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters, and said, 'Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?' And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.
King James Version
6And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
7And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
8And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
9And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
13He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
14And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
Christian Standard Bible
7Fifty men from the sons of the prophets came and stood observing them at a distance while the two of them stood by the Jordan.
8Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water, which parted to the right and left. Then the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
12As Elisha watched, he kept crying out, "My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!" When he could see him no longer, he took hold of his own clothes, tore them in two,
13picked up the mantle that had fallen off Elijah, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.
14He took the mantle Elijah had dropped, and he struck the water. "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" he asked. He struck the water himself, and it parted to the right and the left, and Elisha crossed over.
New Living Translation
7Fifty men from the group of prophets also went and watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped beside the Jordan River.
8Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground!
11As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.
12Elisha saw it and cried out, 'My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!' And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress.
