Acts 1:3-26
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
3To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of things regarding the kingdom of God. 4Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, 'Which,' He said, 'you heard of from Me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.'
6So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, 'Lord, is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?'
7But He said to them, 'It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which the Father has set by His own authority;
8but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.'
9And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight.
10And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, then behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them,
11and they said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.'
12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.
13When they had entered the city, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, Peter, John, James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
14All these were continually devoting themselves with one mind to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
15At this time Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters (a group of about 120 people was there together), and said,
16Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
17For he was counted among us and received his share in this ministry.'
18(Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.
19And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem; as a result that field was called Hakeldama in their own language, that is, Field of Blood.)
20For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘MAY HIS RESIDENCE BE MADE DESOLATE, AND MAY THERE BE NONE LIVING IN IT’; and, ‘MAY ANOTHER TAKE HIS OFFICE.’
21Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us—
22beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.'
23So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias.
24And they prayed and said, 'You, Lord, who know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen
25to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.'
26And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.
King James Version
Chapter 1
3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
12Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
16Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
17For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
18Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
20For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
21Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

4While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. "Which," he said, "you have heard me speak about;
5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days."
7He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

14They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
15In those days Peter stood up among the brothers and sisters —the number of people who were together was about a hundred and twenty—and said:
16"Brothers and sisters, it was necessary that the Scripture be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David foretold about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
17For he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."
18Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst, his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.
19This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama (that is, Field of Blood).
21"Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us—
22beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us—from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of his resurrection."
23So they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.
24Then they prayed, "You, Lord, know everyone’s hearts; show which of these two you have chosen
25to take the place in this apostolic ministry that Judas left to go where he belongs."
26Then they cast lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias and he was added to the eleven apostles.
New Living Translation
4Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, 'Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.
5John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
7He replied, 'The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere — in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.'
9After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.
10As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them.
11Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!'
13When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the zealot), and Judas (son of James).
14They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.
15During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them.
16Brothers,' he said, 'the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.
17Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.'
18(Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, spilling out all his intestines.
19The news of his death spread to all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name Akeldama, which means 'Field of Blood.')
21So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus —
22from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus’ resurrection.'
23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
24Then they all prayed, 'O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen
25as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.'
26Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.
