Acts 16:21-40
New American Standard Bible
22The crowd joined in an attack against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.
23When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;
24and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;
26and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.
27When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped.
28But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, 'Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!'
29And the jailer asked for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas;
30and after he brought them out, he said, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'
31They said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.'
32And they spoke the word of God to him together with all who were in his house.
33And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.
34And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and was overjoyed, since he had become a believer in God together with his whole household.
35Now when day came, the chief magistrates sent their officers, saying, 'Release those men.'
36And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, 'The chief magistrates have sent word that you be released. So come out now and go in peace.'
37But Paul said to them, 'After beating us in public without due process—men who are Romans—they threw us into prison; and now they are releasing us secretly? No indeed! On the contrary, let them come in person and lead us out.'
38The officers reported these words to the chief magistrates. And they became fearful when they heard that they were Romans,
39and they came and pleaded with them, and when they had led them out, they repeatedly asked them to leave the city.
40They left the prison and entered the house of Lydia, and when they saw the brothers and sisters, they encouraged them and departed.

Chapter 16
21And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
27And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
35And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
36And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.
37But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
38And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
39And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.
40And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

21and are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice." 22The crowd joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23After they had severely flogged them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to guard them carefully. 24Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.
25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains came loose.
27When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison standing open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped.
29The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.
30He escorted them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

34He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had come to believe in God with his entire household.
38The police reported these words to the magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
39So they came to appease them, and escorting them from prison, they urged them to leave town.
40After leaving the jail, they came to Lydia’s house, where they saw and encouraged the brothers and sisters, and departed.
New Living Translation
22A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods.
23They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape.
24So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.
25Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.
26Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!
27The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself.
28But Paul shouted to him, 'Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!'
29The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.
30Then he brought them out and asked, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'
31They replied, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.'
32And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household.
33Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized.
34He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God.
35The next morning the city officials sent the police to tell the jailer, 'Let those men go!'
36So the jailer told Paul, 'The city officials have said you and Silas are free to leave. Go in peace.'
38When the police reported this, the city officials were alarmed to learn that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
39So they came to the jail and apologized to them. Then they brought them out and begged them to leave the city.
40When Paul and Silas left the prison, they returned to the home of Lydia. There they met with the believers and encouraged them once more. Then they left town.
