Ezra 4:1-6
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
1
Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people of the exile were building a temple to the
Lord
God of Israel,
2
they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’
households,
and said to them, 'Let us build with you, for like you, we seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.'
3
But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers’
households
of Israel said to them, 'You have nothing
in common
with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build for the
Lord
God of Israel, just as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, has commanded us.'
4
Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building,
5
and bribed advisers against them to frustrate their advice all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6
Now in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
King James Version
Chapter 4
1
Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the
Lord
God of Israel;
2
Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3
But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the
Lord
God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4
Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5
And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6
And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

Chapter 4
1
When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple for the
Lord
, the God of Israel,
2
they approached Zerubbabel and the family heads and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we also worship your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time King Esar-haddon of Assyria brought us here."
3
But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other heads of Israel’s families answered them, "You may have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone will build it for the
Lord
, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us."
4
Then the people who were already in the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build.
5
They also bribed officials to act against them to frustrate their plans throughout the reign of King Cyrus of Persia and until the reign of King Darius of Persia.
6
At the beginning of the reign of Ahasuerus, the people who were already in the land wrote an accusation against the residents of Judah and Jerusalem.
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
1
The enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were rebuilding a Temple to the
Lord
, the God of Israel.
2
So they approached Zerubbabel and the other leaders and said, 'Let us build with you, for we worship your God just as you do. We have sacrificed to him ever since King Esarhaddon of Assyria brought us here.'
3
But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other leaders of Israel replied, 'You may have no part in this work. We alone will build the Temple for the
Lord
, the God of Israel, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.'
4
Then the local residents tried to discourage and frighten the people of Judah to keep them from their work.
5
They bribed agents to work against them and to frustrate their plans. This went on during the entire reign of King Cyrus of Persia and lasted until King Darius of Persia took the throne.
6
Years later when Xerxes began his reign, the enemies of Judah wrote a letter of accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
