Genesis 35:5-25
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 35
5As they journeyed, there was a great terror upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7Then he built an altar there, and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled from his brother. 8Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; and it was named Allon-bacuth.
11God also said to him, 'I am God Almighty; Be fruitful and multiply; A nation and a multitude of nations shall come from you, And kings shall come from you.
12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, And I will give the land to your descendants after you.'
13Then God went up from him at the place where He had spoken with him.
14So Jacob set up a memorial stone in the place where He had spoken with him, a memorial of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.
15And Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel.
16Then they journeyed on from Bethel; but when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she suffered severe difficulties in her labor.
17And when she was suffering severe difficulties in her labor, the midwife said to her, 'Do not fear, for you have another son!'
18And it came about, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20And Jacob set up a memorial stone over her grave; that is the memorial stone of Rachel’s grave to this day.
21Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22And it came about, while Israel was living in that land, that Reuben went and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard about it. Now there were twelve sons of Jacob—
23the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
24the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;
25and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s female slave, were Dan and Naphtali;
King James Version
6So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
7And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
9And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
10And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
11And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
15And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
16And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
19And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
21And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
22And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

Chapter 35
5When they set out, a terror from God came over the cities around them, and they did not pursue Jacob’s sons. 6So Jacob and all who were with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel ) in the land of Canaan. 7Jacob built an altar there and called the place El-bethel because it was there that God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
9God appeared to Jacob again after he returned from Paddan-aram, and he blessed him.
10God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; you will no longer be named Jacob, but your name will be Israel." So he named him Israel.
11God also said to him, "I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, will come from you, and kings will descend from you.
12I will give to you the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac. And I will give the land to your future descendants."
13Then God withdrew from him at the place where he had spoken to him.
14Jacob set up a marker at the place where he had spoken to him—a stone marker. He poured a drink offering on it and anointed it with oil.
15Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.
16They set out from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult.
17During her difficult labor, the midwife said to her, "Don’t be afraid, for you have another son."
18With her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin.
19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem ).
20Jacob set up a marker on her grave; it is the marker at Rachel’s grave still today.
New Living Translation
6Eventually, Jacob and his household arrived at Luz (also called Bethel) in Canaan.
7Jacob built an altar there and named the place El-bethel (which means 'God of Bethel'), because God had appeared to him there when he was fleeing from his brother, Esau.
9Now that Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again at Bethel. God blessed him,
10saying, 'Your name is Jacob, but you will not be called Jacob any longer. From now on your name will be Israel.' So God renamed him Israel.
11Then God said, 'I am El-Shaddai — ‘God Almighty.’ Be fruitful and multiply. You will become a great nation, even many nations. Kings will be among your descendants!
12And I will give you the land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac. Yes, I will give it to you and your descendants after you.'
13Then God went up from the place where he had spoken to Jacob.
14Jacob set up a stone pillar to mark the place where God had spoken to him. Then he poured wine over it as an offering to God and anointed the pillar with olive oil.
15And Jacob named the place Bethel (which means 'house of God'), because God had spoken to him there.
16Leaving Bethel, Jacob and his clan moved on toward Ephrath. But Rachel went into labor while they were still some distance away. Her labor pains were intense.
17After a very hard delivery, the midwife finally exclaimed, 'Don’t be afraid — you have another son!'
18Rachel was about to die, but with her last breath she named the baby Ben-oni (which means 'son of my sorrow'). The baby’s father, however, called him Benjamin (which means 'son of my right hand').
19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20Jacob set up a stone monument over Rachel’s grave, and it can be seen there to this day.
