Chapter 49

1Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, 'Assemble yourselves, so that I may tell you what will happen to you in the days to come.
2Gather together and listen, sons of Jacob; Yes, listen to Israel your father. 3'Reuben, you are my firstborn, My might and the beginning of my strength, Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. 4 Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence, Because you went up to your father’s bed; Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch. 5'Simeon and Levi are brothers; Their swords are implements of violence.

Chapter 49

1And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days. 2Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.
3Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:
4Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
5Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

1Then Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather around, and I will tell you what will happen to you in the days to come.
2Come together and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel: 3Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength and the firstfruits of my virility, excelling in prominence, excelling in power.
4Turbulent as water, you will not excel, because you got into your father’s bed and you defiled it—he got into my bed. 5Simeon and Levi are brothers; their knives are vicious weapons.

1Then Jacob called together all his sons and said, 'Gather around me, and I will tell you what will happen to each of you in the days to come.
2'Come and listen, you sons of Jacob; listen to Israel, your father.
3'Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, the child of my vigorous youth. You are first in rank and first in power. 4But you are as unruly as a flood, and you will be first no longer. For you went to bed with my wife; you defiled my marriage couch.
5'Simeon and Levi are two of a kind; their weapons are instruments of violence.
