James 2:17-26
New American Standard Bible
18But someone may well say, 'You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.'
19You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
20But are you willing to acknowledge, you foolish person, that faith without works is useless?
21Was our father Abraham not justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?
22You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
23and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, 'AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED God, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS,' and he was called a friend of God.
24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25In the same way, was Rahab the prostitute not justified by works also when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
King James Version
18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
Christian Standard Bible
18But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.
19You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder.
20Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless?
21Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works in offering Isaac his son on the altar?
22You see that faith was active together with his works, and by works, faith was made complete,
23and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.
24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works in receiving the messengers and sending them out by a different route?
26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
New Living Translation
Chapter 2
17So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
19You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.
20How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
21Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.
23And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: 'Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.' He was even called the friend of God.
24So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
English Standard Version
18But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
19You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe — and shudder!
20Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?
22You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;
23and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness" — and he was called a friend of God.
24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
25And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
New International Version
18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
20You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless ?
21Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God’s friend.
24You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
New King James Version
18But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
19You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
20But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
22Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.
24You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
