Jeremiah 22:15-20

Chapter 22

15Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar? Did your father not eat and drink And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well for him. 16He pled the cause of the afflicted and the poor, Then it was well. Is that not what it means to know Me?' Declares the Lord.
17'But your eyes and your heart Are intent only upon your own dishonest gain, And on shedding innocent blood, And on practicing oppression and extortion.'
18Therefore this is what the Lord says regarding Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: 'They will not mourn for him: ‘Oh, my brother!’ or, ‘Oh, sister!’ They will not mourn for him: ‘Oh, for the master!’ or, ‘Oh, for his splendor!’
19He will be buried with a donkey’s burial, Dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem. 20Go up to Lebanon and cry out, And raise your voice in Bashan; Cry out also from Abarim, For all your lovers have been crushed.

15Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?
16He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the Lord.
17But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.
18Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!
19He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem. 20Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.

15Are you a king because you excel in cedar? Didn’t your father eat and drink and administer justice and righteousness? Then it went well with him.
16He took up the case of the poor and needy; then it went well. Is this not what it means to know me? This is the Lord’s declaration. 17But you have eyes and a heart for nothing except your own dishonest profit, shedding innocent blood and committing extortion and oppression.
18Therefore, this is what the Lord says concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: They will not mourn for him, saying, "Woe, my brother!" or "Woe, my sister!" They will not mourn for him, saying, "Woe, lord! Woe, his majesty!"
19He will be buried like a donkey, dragged off and thrown outside Jerusalem’s gates. 20Go up to Lebanon and cry out; raise your voice in Bashan; cry out from Abarim, for all your lovers have been crushed.

Chapter 22

15But a beautiful cedar palace does not make a great king! Your father, Josiah, also had plenty to eat and drink. But he was just and right in all his dealings. That is why God blessed him. 16He gave justice and help to the poor and needy, and everything went well for him. Isn’t that what it means to know me?' says the Lord. 17'But you! You have eyes only for greed and dishonesty! You murder the innocent, oppress the poor, and reign ruthlessly.'
18Therefore, this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim, son of King Josiah: 'The people will not mourn for him, crying to one another, ‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’ His subjects will not mourn for him, crying, ‘Alas, our master is dead! Alas, his splendor is gone!’ 19He will be buried like a dead donkey — dragged out of Jerusalem and dumped outside the gates! 20Weep for your allies in Lebanon. Shout for them in Bashan. Search for them in the regions east of the river. See, they are all destroyed. Not one is left to help you.
