Job 40:1-18
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 40
1Then the Lord said to Job,
4'Behold, I am insignificant; what can I say in response to You? I put my hand on my mouth.
5I have spoken once, and I will not reply; Or twice, and I will add nothing more.'
7'Now tighten the belt on your waist like a man; I will ask you, and you instruct Me.
8Will you really nullify My judgment? Will you condemn Me so that you may be justified?
9Or do you have an arm like God, And can you thunder with a voice like His?
10'Adorn yourself with pride and dignity, And clothe yourself with honor and majesty.
11Let out your outbursts of anger, And look at everyone who is arrogant, and humble him.
12Look at everyone who is arrogant, and humble him, And trample down the wicked where they stand.
13Hide them together in the dust; Imprison them in the hidden place.
14Then I will also confess to you, That your own right hand can save you.
15'Behold, Behemoth, which I made as well as you; He eats grass like an ox.
16Behold, his strength in his waist, And his power in the muscles of his belly.
17He hangs his tail like a cedar; The tendons of his thighs are knit together.
18His bones are tubes of bronze; His limbs are like bars of iron.
King James Version
Chapter 40
1Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said, 2Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.
5Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.
6Then answered the Lord unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
7Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 40
1The Lord answered Job:
4I am so insignificant. How can I answer you? I place my hand over my mouth.
5I have spoken once, and I will not reply; twice, but now I can add nothing.
7Get ready to answer me like a man; When I question you, you will inform me.
8Would you really challenge my justice? Would you declare me guilty to justify yourself?
9Do you have an arm like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like his?
10Adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory.
11Pour out your raging anger; look on every proud person and humiliate him.
12Look on every proud person and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand.
13Hide them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave.
14Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can deliver you.
15Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like cattle.
16Look at the strength of his back and the power in the muscles of his belly.
17He stiffens his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are woven firmly together.
18His bones are bronze tubes; his limbs are like iron rods.
New Living Translation
Chapter 40
1Then the Lord said to Job,
4'I am nothing — how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand.
5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.'
8'Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right?
9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his?
10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty.
11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud.
12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand.
13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead.
14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you.

Chapter 40
1And the Lord said to Job:
2"Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it."
3Then Job answered the Lord and said:
4"Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
5I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further."
6Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
7 "Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.
8Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right?
9Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?
10"Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
11Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him.
12Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.
13 Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below.
14Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you.
15"Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox.
16Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly.
17He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron.
New International Version
Chapter 40
1The Lord said to Job:
4"I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.
5I spoke once, but I have no answer— twice, but I will say no more."
7"Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.
8"Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
9Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his?
10Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.
11Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low,
12look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand.
13Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.
14Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
15"Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.
16What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly!
17Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
18Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.
New King James Version
Chapter 40
1Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:
4“Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth.
5Once I have spoken, but I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
7“Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me:
8“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?
9Have you an arm like God? Or can you thunder with a voice like His?
10 Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, And array yourself with glory and beauty.
11Disperse the rage of your wrath; Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.
12Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low; Tread down the wicked in their place.
13Hide them in the dust together, Bind their faces in hidden darkness.
14Then I will also confess to you That your own right hand can save you.
15“Look now at the behemoth, which I made along with you; He eats grass like an ox.
16See now, his strength is in his hips, And his power is in his stomach muscles.
17He moves his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
18His bones are like beams of bronze, His ribs like bars of iron.
