Job 41:7-34

New American Standard Bible

Chapter 41

7Can you fill his skin with harpoons, Or his head with fishing spears? 8Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle; you will not do it again! 9 Behold, your expectation is false; Will you be hurled down even at the sight of him? 10No one is so reckless that he dares to stir him; Who then is he who opposes Me? 11Who has been first to give to Me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the entire heaven is Mine. 12'I will not be silent about his limbs, Or his mighty strength, or his graceful frame. 13Who can strip off his outer covering? Who can pierce his double armor? 14Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth there is terror. 15 His strong scales are his pride, Locked as with a tight seal. 16One is so close to another That no air can come between them. 17They are joined one to another; They clasp each other and cannot be separated. 18His sneezes flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eye of dawn. 19From his mouth go burning torches; Sparks of fire leap forth. 20From his nostrils smoke goes out As from a boiling pot and burning reeds. 21His breath sets coals aglow, And a flame goes forth from his mouth. 22In his neck dwells strength, And dismay leaps before him. 23The folds of his flesh are joined together, Firm and immovable on him. 24His heart is as firm as a stone, And as firm as a lower millstone. 25When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; Because of the crashing they are bewildered. 26The sword that reaches him cannot prevail, Nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. 27He regards iron as straw, Bronze as rotten wood. 28The arrow cannot make him flee; Slingstones are turned into stubble for him. 29Clubs are regarded as stubble; He laughs at the rattling of the javelin. 30His underparts are like sharp pieces of pottery; He spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mud. 31He makes the depths boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a jar of ointment. 32Behind him he illuminates a pathway; One would think the deep to be gray-haired. 33Nothing on earth is like him, One made without fear. 34 He looks on everything that is high; He is king over all the sons of pride.'

11Who confronted me, that I should repay him? Everything under heaven belongs to me. 12I cannot be silent about his limbs, his power, and his graceful proportions. 13Who can strip off his outer covering? Who can penetrate his double layer of armor? 14Who can open his jaws, surrounded by those terrifying teeth? 15His pride is in his rows of scales, closely sealed together. 16One scale is so close to another that no air can pass between them. 17They are joined to one another, so closely connected they cannot be separated. 18His snorting flashes with light, while his eyes are like the rays of dawn. 19Flaming torches shoot from his mouth; fiery sparks fly out! 20Smoke billows from his nostrils as from a boiling pot or burning reeds. 21His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames pour out of his mouth. 22Strength resides in his neck, and dismay dances before him. 23The folds of his flesh are joined together, solid as metal and immovable. 24His heart is as hard as a rock, as hard as a lower millstone! 25When Leviathan rises, the mighty are terrified; they withdraw because of his thrashing. 26The sword that reaches him will have no effect, nor will a spear, dart, or arrow. 27He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. 28No arrow can make him flee; slingstones become like stubble to him. 29A club is regarded as stubble, and he laughs at the sound of a javelin. 30His undersides are jagged potsherds, spreading the mud like a threshing sledge. 31He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron; he makes the sea like an ointment jar. 32He leaves a shining wake behind him; one would think the deep had gray hair! 33He has no equal on earth— a creature devoid of fear! 34He surveys everything that is haughty; he is king over all the proud beasts.

Chapter 41

7Can you fill his skin with harpoons or his head with fishing spears? 8Lay your hands on him; remember the battle — you will not do it again! 9 Behold, the hope of a man is false; he is laid low even at the sight of him. 10No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? 11 Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine. 12"I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame. 13Who can strip off his outer garment? Who would come near him with a bridle? 14Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. 15His back is made of rows of shields, shut up closely as with a seal. 16One is so near to another that no air can come between them. 17They are joined one to another; they clasp each other and cannot be separated. 18His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn. 19Out of his mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap forth. 20Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. 21His breath kindles coals, and a flame comes forth from his mouth. 22In his neck abides strength, and terror dances before him. 23The folds of his flesh stick together, firmly cast on him and immovable. 24His heart is hard as a stone, hard as the lower millstone. 25When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves. 26Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail, nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. 27He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. 28The arrow cannot make him flee; for him, sling stones are turned to stubble. 29Clubs are counted as stubble; he laughs at the rattle of javelins. 30His underparts are like sharp potsherds; he spreads himself like a threshing sledge on the mire. 31He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. 32Behind him he leaves a shining wake; one would think the deep to be white-haired. 33 On earth there is not his like, a creature without fear. 34He sees everything that is high; he is king over all the sons of pride."
New International Version
11Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me. 12"I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form. 13Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor ? 14Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth? 15Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together; 16each is so close to the next that no air can pass between. 17They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted. 18Its snorting throws out flashes of light; its eyes are like the rays of dawn. 19Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. 20Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds. 21Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth. 22Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it. 23The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable. 24Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone. 25When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing. 26The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin. 27Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood. 28Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones are like chaff to it. 29A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance. 30Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. 31It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment. 32It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair. 33Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear. 34It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud."

Chapter 41

7Can you fill his skin with harpoons, Or his head with fishing spears? 8Lay your hand on him; Remember the battle— Never do it again! 9Indeed, any hope of overcoming him is false; Shall one not be overwhelmed at the sight of him? 10No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up. Who then is able to stand against Me? 11 Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine. 12“I will not conceal his limbs, His mighty power, or his graceful proportions. 13Who can remove his outer coat? Who can approach him with a double bridle? 14Who can open the doors of his face, With his terrible teeth all around? 15 His rows of scales are his pride, Shut up tightly as with a seal; 16One is so near another That no air can come between them; 17They are joined one to another, They stick together and cannot be parted. 18His sneezings flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. 19Out of his mouth go burning lights; Sparks of fire shoot out. 20Smoke goes out of his nostrils, As from a boiling pot and burning rushes. 21His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes out of his mouth. 22Strength dwells in his neck, And sorrow dances before him. 23The folds of his flesh are joined together; They are firm on him and cannot be moved. 24His heart is as hard as stone, Even as hard as the lower millstone. 25When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; Because of his crashings they are beside themselves. 26 Though the sword reaches him, it cannot avail; Nor does spear, dart, or javelin. 27He regards iron as straw, And bronze as rotten wood. 28The arrow cannot make him flee; Slingstones become like stubble to him. 29Darts are regarded as straw; He laughs at the threat of javelins. 30His undersides are like sharp potsherds; He spreads pointed marks in the mire. 31He makes the deep boil like a pot; He makes the sea like a pot of ointment. 32He leaves a shining wake behind him; One would think the deep had white hair. 33On earth there is nothing like him, Which is made without fear. 34He beholds every high thing; He is king over all the children of pride.”
