John 4:17-34
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
17The woman answered and said to Him, 'I have no husband.' Jesus *said to her, 'You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.' 19The woman *said to Him, 'Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and yet you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.' 21Jesus *said to her, 'Believe Me, woman, that a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23But a time is coming, and even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.' 25The woman *said to Him, 'I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.' 26Jesus *said to her, 'I am He, the One speaking to you.'
27And at this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, 'What are You seeking?' or, 'Why are You speaking with her?'
28So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people,
29Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?'
30They left the city and were coming to Him.
31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, 'Rabbi, eat something.'
32But He said to them, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.'
33So the disciples were saying to one another, 'No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?'
34Jesus *said to them, 'My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.

Chapter 4
17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Chapter 4
17"I don’t have a husband," she answered. "You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’" Jesus said. 18"For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true."
19"Sir," the woman replied, "I see that you are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."
21Jesus told her, "Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
23But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.
24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth."

Chapter 4
17I don’t have a husband,' the woman replied. Jesus said, 'You’re right! You don’t have a husband — 18for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!'
19Sir,' the woman said, 'you must be a prophet.
20So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?'
21Jesus replied, 'Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
22You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.
23But the time is coming — indeed it’s here now — when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.
24For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.'
27Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, 'What do you want with her?' or 'Why are you talking to her?'
28The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,
29Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?'
30So the people came streaming from the village to see him.

Chapter 4
17"I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. 18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
19"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
