John 4:8-31
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
8For His disciples had gone away to the city to buy food. 9So the Samaritan woman *said to Him, 'How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?' (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10Jesus replied to her, 'If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.' 11She *said to Him, 'Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this living water? 12You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?' 13Jesus answered and said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.'
15The woman *said to Him, 'Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.'
16He *said to her, 'Go, call your husband and come here.'
17The woman answered and said to Him, 'I have no husband.' Jesus *said to her, 'You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’;
18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.'
19The woman *said to Him, 'Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and yet you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.'
21Jesus *said to her, 'Believe Me, woman, that a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
23But a time is coming, and even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.'
25The woman *said to Him, 'I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.'
26Jesus *said to her, 'I am He, the One speaking to you.'
27And at this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, 'What are You seeking?' or, 'Why are You speaking with her?'
28So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people,
29Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?'
30They left the city and were coming to Him.

Chapter 4
8For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

11"Sir," said the woman, "you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?
12You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock."
13Jesus said, "Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again.
14But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life."
17"I don’t have a husband," she answered. "You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’" Jesus said.
18"For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true."
19"Sir," the woman replied, "I see that you are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."
21Jesus told her, "Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.
23But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.
24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth."

Chapter 4
8He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
11But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,' she said, 'and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?
12And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?'
13Jesus replied, 'Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.
14But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.'
17I don’t have a husband,' the woman replied. Jesus said, 'You’re right! You don’t have a husband —
18for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!'
19Sir,' the woman said, 'you must be a prophet.
20So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?'
21Jesus replied, 'Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
22You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews.
23But the time is coming — indeed it’s here now — when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.
24For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.'
27Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, 'What do you want with her?' or 'Why are you talking to her?'
28The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,
29Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?'
30So the people came streaming from the village to see him.

16Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."
17The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;

29"Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?"
30They went out of the town and were coming to him.

18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
19"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
