Chapter 6
4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to Philip, 'Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?' 6But He was saying this only to test him, for He Himself knew what He intended to do. 7Philip answered Him, 'Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!' 8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, 9There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many people?' 10Jesus said, 'Have the people recline to eat.' Now there was plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. 11Jesus then took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12And when they had eaten their fill, He *said to His disciples, 'Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.' 13So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, 'This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.'
16Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
17and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
18In addition, the sea began getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing.
19Then, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat; and they were frightened.
20But He *said to them, 'It is I; do not be afraid.'
21So they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

4And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. 5When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat 6And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. 7Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. 8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, 9There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 10And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. 12When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. 13Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. 14Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. 15When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
16And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
18And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
20But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

4Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. 5So when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, "Where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?" 6He asked this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do.
8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
9"There’s a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish—but what are they for so many?"
10Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place; so they sat down. The men numbered about five thousand.
11Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks he distributed them to those who were seated—so also with the fish, as much as they wanted.
12When they were full, he told his disciples, "Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted."
13So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten.
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them.
18A high wind arose, and the sea began to churn.
19After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid.
20But he said to them, "It is I. Don’t be afraid."
21Then they were willing to take him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.

Chapter 6
4(It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.) 5Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, 'Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?' 6He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.
8Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.
9There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?'
10Tell everyone to sit down,' Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.)
11Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
12After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, 'Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.'
13So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.
14When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, 'Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!'
15When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
16That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him.
17But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.
18Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough.
19They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified,
20but he called out to them, 'Don’t be afraid. I am here! '
21Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!

9"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"
10Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
11Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."

14After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world."
15Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
17where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.
18A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.
19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.
20But he said to them, "It is I; don’t be afraid."
21Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
