Chapter 1

8Then they said to him, 'Tell us, now! On whose account has this catastrophe struck us? What is your occupation, and where do you come from? What is your country, and from what people are you?' 9So he said to them, 'I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land.'
10Then the men became extremely afraid, and they said to him, 'How could you do this?' For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11So they said to him, 'What should we do to you so that the sea will become calm for us?'—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12And he said to them, 'Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.' 13However, the men rowed desperately to return to land, but they could not, because the sea was becoming even stormier against them.

For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. 12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. 13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

8Then they said to him, "Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from?"
9He answered them, "I’m a Hebrew. I worship the Lord, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land."
10Then the men were seized by a great fear and said to him, "What is this you’ve done?" The men knew he was fleeing from the Lord’s presence because he had told them. 11So they said to him, "What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us?" For the sea was getting worse and worse.
12He answered them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea so that it will calm down for you, for I know that I’m to blame for this great storm that is against you." 13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn’t because the sea was raging against them more and more.

8Why has this awful storm come down on us?' they demanded. 'Who are you? What is your line of work? What country are you from? What is your nationality?'
9Jonah answered, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.'
10The sailors were terrified when they heard this, for he had already told them he was running away from the Lord. 'Oh, why did you do it?' they groaned. 11And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, 'What should we do to you to stop this storm?'
12Throw me into the sea,' Jonah said, 'and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.'
13Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it.

8So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"
9He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."
10This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"
12"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."
13Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
