Judges 1:20-32
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
20Then they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had promised; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak. 21But the sons of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem; so the Jebusites have lived with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22Likewise the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
23The house of Joseph had men spy out Bethel (the name of the city previously was Luz).
24And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, 'Please show us the entrance to the city, and we will treat you kindly.'
25So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go free.
26Then the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
27But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites persisted in living in this land.
28And it came about, when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor; but they did not drive them out completely.
King James Version
Chapter 1
20And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. 21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. 22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the Lord was with them. 23And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) 24And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. 25And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. 26And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
27Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

22The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
23They sent spies to Bethel (the town was formerly named Luz ).
24The spies saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, "Please show us how to get into town, and we will show you kindness."
25When he showed them the way into the town, they put the town to the sword but released the man and his entire family.
26Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name still today.
27At that time Manasseh failed to take possession of Beth-shean and Taanach and their surrounding villages, or the residents of Dor, Ibleam, and Megiddo and their surrounding villages; the Canaanites were determined to stay in this land.
28When Israel became stronger, they made the Canaanites serve as forced labor but never drove them out completely.
New Living Translation
22The descendants of Joseph attacked the town of Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
23They sent men to scout out Bethel (formerly known as Luz).
24They confronted a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us a way into the town, and we will have mercy on you.'
25So he showed them a way in, and they killed everyone in the town except that man and his family.
26Later the man moved to the land of the Hittites, where he built a town. He named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
27The tribe of Manasseh failed to drive out the people living in Beth-shan, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, and all their surrounding settlements, because the Canaanites were determined to stay in that region.
28When the Israelites grew stronger, they forced the Canaanites to work as slaves, but they never did drive them completely out of the land.

23And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)

26And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.

New International Version
Chapter 1
20As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. 21The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
23When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),
24the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well."
25So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family.
26He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.
27But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.
28When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.
29Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
30Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.
31Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.
32The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.
