Leviticus 25:36-55

Chapter 25
36Do not take any kind of interest from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may live with you. 37You shall not give him your silver at interest, nor your food for profit. 38I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
39‘Now if a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave’s service.
40He shall be with you as a hired worker, as if he were a foreign resident; he shall serve with you up to the year of jubilee.
41He shall then leave you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, so that he may return to the property of his forefathers.
42For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale.
43You shall not rule over him with severity, but are to revere your God.
44As for your male and female slaves whom you may have—you may acquire male and female slaves from the pagan nations that are around you.
45You may also acquire them from the sons of the foreign residents who reside among you, and from their families who are with you, whom they will have produced in your land; they also may become your possession.
46You may also pass them on as an inheritance to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves. But in respect to your countrymen, the sons of Israel, you shall not rule with severity over one another.
47‘Now if the means of a stranger or of a foreign resident with you becomes sufficient, and a countryman of yours becomes poor in relation to him and sells himself to a stranger who is residing with you, or to the descendants of a stranger’s family,
48then he shall have redemption right after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him,
49or his uncle, or his uncle’s son may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him; or if he prospers, he may redeem himself.
50He then, with his purchaser, shall calculate from the year when he sold himself to him up to the year of jubilee; and the price of his sale shall correspond to the number of years calculated. It is like the days of a hired worker that he will be with him.
51If there are still many years remaining, he shall refund part of his purchase price in proportion to them for his own redemption;
52but if few years remain until the year of jubilee, he shall so calculate with him. In proportion to his years he is to refund the amount for his redemption.
53He shall be with him like a worker hired year by year; he shall not rule over him with severity in your sight.
54Even if he is not redeemed by these means, he shall still leave in the year of jubilee, he and his sons with him.
55For the sons of Israel are My servants; they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

36Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. 37Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. 38I am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
39And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:
40But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:
41And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.
42For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.
43Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.
44Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
45Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
46And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
47And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger's family:
48After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:
49Either his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself.
50And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him.
51If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for.
52And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption.
53And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight.
54And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him.
55For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

41Then he and his children are to be released from you, and he may return to his clan and his ancestral property.
42They are not to be sold as slaves, because they are my servants that I brought out of the land of Egypt.
43You are not to rule over them harshly but fear your God.
44Your male and female slaves are to be from the nations around you; you may purchase male and female slaves.
45You may also purchase them from the aliens residing with you, or from their families living among you—those born in your land. These may become your property.
46You may leave them to your sons after you to inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But concerning your brothers, the Israelites, you must not rule over one another harshly.
47"If an alien or temporary resident living among you prospers, but your brother living near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the alien living among you, or to a member of the resident alien’s clan,
48he has the right of redemption after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him.
49His uncle or cousin may redeem him, or any of his close relatives from his clan may redeem him. If he prospers, he may redeem himself.
50The one who purchased him is to calculate the time from the year he sold himself to him until the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years. It will be set for him like the daily wages of a hired worker.
51If many years are still left, he must pay his redemption price in proportion to them based on his purchase price.
52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, he will calculate and pay the price of his redemption in proportion to his remaining years.
53He will stay with him like a man hired year by year. A resident alien is not to rule over him harshly in your sight.
54If he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released at the Year of Jubilee.
55For the Israelites are my servants. They are my servants that I brought out of the land of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.
New Living Translation
Chapter 25
36Do not charge interest or make a profit at his expense. Instead, show your fear of God by letting him live with you as your relative. 37Remember, do not charge interest on money you lend him or make a profit on food you sell him. 38I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.
39If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell himself to you, do not treat him as a slave.
40Treat him instead as a hired worker or as a temporary resident who lives with you, and he will serve you only until the Year of Jubilee.
41At that time he and his children will no longer be obligated to you, and they will return to their clans and go back to the land originally allotted to their ancestors.
42The people of Israel are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt, so they must never be sold as slaves.
43Show your fear of God by not treating them harshly.
44However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you.
45You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property,
46passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat them as slaves, but you must never treat your fellow Israelites this way.
47Suppose a foreigner or temporary resident becomes rich while living among you. If any of your fellow Israelites fall into poverty and are forced to sell themselves to such a foreigner or to a member of his family,
48they still retain the right to be bought back, even after they have been purchased. They may be bought back by a brother,
49an uncle, or a cousin. In fact, anyone from the extended family may buy them back. They may also redeem themselves if they have prospered.
50They will negotiate the price of their freedom with the person who bought them. The price will be based on the number of years from the time they were sold until the next Year of Jubilee — whatever it would cost to hire a worker for that period of time.
51If many years still remain until the jubilee, they will repay the proper proportion of what they received when they sold themselves.
52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they will repay a small amount for their redemption.
53The foreigner must treat them as workers hired on a yearly basis. You must not allow a foreigner to treat any of your fellow Israelites harshly.
54If any Israelites have not been bought back by the time the Year of Jubilee arrives, they and their children must be set free at that time.
55For the people of Israel belong to me. They are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

52If there remain but a few years until the year of jubilee, he shall calculate and pay for his redemption in proportion to his years of service.
53He shall treat him as a worker hired year by year. He shall not rule ruthlessly over him in your sight.
54And if he is not redeemed by these means, then he and his children with him shall be released in the year of jubilee.
55For it is to me that the people of Israel are servants. They are my servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

49An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper, they may redeem themselves.
50They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker for that number of years.
51If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them.
52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly.
53They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly.
