Luke 17:4-9
New American Standard Bible
5The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith!'
6But the Lord said, 'If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.
7Now which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him after he comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and recline at the table to eat’?
8On the contrary, will he not say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’?
9He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he?
King James Version
5And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
6And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
7But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?
8And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?
9Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
Christian Standard Bible
7"Which one of you having a servant tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’?
8Instead, will he not tell him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, get ready, and serve me while I eat and drink; later you can eat and drink’?
9Does he thank that servant because he did what was commanded?
New Living Translation
7When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’?
8No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’
9And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not.
