Chapter 22

20And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, 'This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant in My blood. 21But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. 22For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!' 23And they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was going to do this.
24And a dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest. 25And He said to them, 'The kings of the Gentiles domineer over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26But it is not this way for you; rather, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
28You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials; 29and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you 30that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you men like wheat; 32but I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail; and you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.' 33But he said to Him, 'Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!' 34But He said, 'I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.'
35And He said to them, 'When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?' They said, 'No, nothing.' 36And He said to them, 'But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his cloak and buy one. 37For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘AND HE WAS COUNTED WITH WRONGDOERS’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.' 38They said, 'Lord, look, here are two swords.' And He said to them, 'It is enough.'
39And He came out and went, as was His habit, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, 'Pray that you do not come into temptation.' 41And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42saying, 'Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.' 43[ Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44And being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground]. 45When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46and He said to them, 'Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you do not come into temptation.'
47While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48But Jesus said to him, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?' 49When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, 'Lord, shall we strike with the sword?' 50And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus responded and said, 'Stop! No more of this.' And He touched his ear and healed him. 52And Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, 'Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 53While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.'
54Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance. 55After they kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56And a slave woman, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and staring at him, said, 'This man was with Him as well.' 57But he denied it, saying, 'I do not know Him, woman!' 58And a little later, another person saw him and said, 'You are one of them too!' But Peter said, 'Man, I am not!' 59And after about an hour had passed, some other man began to insist, saying, 'Certainly this man also was with Him, for he, too, is a Galilean.' 60But Peter said, 'Man, I do not know what you are talking about!' And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61And then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, 'Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.' 62And he went out and wept bitterly.
63The men who were holding Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him, 64and they blindfolded Him and repeatedly asked Him, saying, 'Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?' 65And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming.
66When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, 67If You are the Christ, tell us.' But He said to them, 'If I tell you, you will not believe; 68and if I ask a question, you will not answer.

20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
21But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 28Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 33And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 34And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing And they said, Nothing.
36Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
39And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46And said unto them, Why sleep ye rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
47And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss 49When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 50And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. 52Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves 53When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
54Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. 55And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. 57And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. 58And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. 59And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. 60And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. 61And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 62And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
63And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
66And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, 67Art thou the Christ tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.

34"I tell you, Peter," he said, "the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me."
35He also said to them, "When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Not a thing," they said.
36Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. 37For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: And he was counted among the lawless. Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment."
38"Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords." "That is enough!" he told them.
39He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40When he reached the place, he told them, "Pray that you may not fall into temptation." 41Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."
43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation."
47While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
49When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" 50Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.
51But Jesus responded, "No more of this!" And touching his ear, he healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? 53Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour —and the dominion of darkness."
54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance. 55They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with him too."
57But he denied it: "Woman, I don’t know him."
58After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You’re one of them too." "Man, I am not!" Peter said.
59About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean."
60But Peter said, "Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him. 64After blindfolding him, they kept asking, "Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?" 65And they were saying many other blasphemous things to him.
66When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin.
67They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I do tell you, you will not believe. 68And if I ask you, you will not answer.

Chapter 22

20After supper he took another cup of wine and said, 'This cup is the new covenant between God and his people — an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.
21But here at this table, sitting among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me. 22For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die. But what sorrow awaits the one who betrays him.' 23The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever do such a thing.
24Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them. 25Jesus told them, 'In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. 27Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.
28You have stayed with me in my time of trial. 29And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right 30to eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.'
33Peter said, 'Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.'
34But Jesus said, 'Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.'
35Then Jesus asked them, 'When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?' 'No,' they replied.
36But now,' he said, 'take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one! 37For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.'
38Look, Lord,' they replied, 'we have two swords among us.' 'That’s enough,' he said.
39Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives. 40There he told them, 'Pray that you will not give in to temptation.'
41He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.' 43Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. 44He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.
45At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. 46Why are you sleeping?' he asked them. 'Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.'
47But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss. 48But Jesus said, 'Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?'
49When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they exclaimed, 'Lord, should we fight? We brought the swords!' 50And one of them struck at the high priest’s slave, slashing off his right ear.
51But Jesus said, 'No more of this.' And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for him. 'Am I some dangerous revolutionary,' he asked, 'that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? 53Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.'
54So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance. 55The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. 56A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, 'This man was one of Jesus’ followers!'
57But Peter denied it. 'Woman,' he said, 'I don’t even know him!'
58After a while someone else looked at him and said, 'You must be one of them!' 'No, man, I’m not!' Peter retorted.
59About an hour later someone else insisted, 'This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.'
60But Peter said, 'Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.' And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
61At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: 'Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.' 62And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.
63The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and said, 'Prophesy to us! Who hit you that time?' 65And they hurled all sorts of terrible insults at him.
66At daybreak all the elders of the people assembled, including the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. Jesus was led before this high council,
67and they said, 'Tell us, are you the Messiah?' But he replied, 'If I tell you, you won’t believe me. 68And if I ask you a question, you won’t answer.

47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
49When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns."
54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."
57But he denied it. "Woman, I don’t know him," he said.
58A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.
59About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."
60Peter replied, "Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" 65And they said many other insulting things to him.
66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.
67"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68and if I asked you, you would not answer.

Chapter 22

20Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
24Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.
28“But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. 29And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
31And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
33But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
35And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.”
36Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
39Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
47And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
54Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance. 55Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”
60But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
63Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. 64And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
66As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying,
67“If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.
