Luke 23:1-21
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 23
1Then the entire assembly of them set out and brought Him before Pilate. 2And they began to bring charges against Him, saying, 'We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.' 3Now Pilate asked Him, saying, 'So You are the King of the Jews?' And He answered him and said, 'It is as you say.' 4But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, 'I find no grounds for charges in the case of this man.' 5But they kept on insisting, saying, 'He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, as far as this place!'
6Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
7And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, since he also was in Jerusalem at this time.
8Now Herod was overjoyed when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him.
9And he questioned Him at some length; but He offered him no answer at all.
10Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him.
11And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.
12And so Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.
13Now Pilate summoned to himself the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,
14and he said to them, 'You brought this man to me on the ground that he is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have found no basis at all in the case of this man for the charges which you are bringing against Him.
15No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.
16Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.'
17[ Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]
18But they cried out all together, saying, 'Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas!'
19( He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.)
20But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again,
21but they kept on crying out, saying, 'Crucify, crucify Him!'
King James Version
Chapter 23
1And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. 3And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. 4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. 5And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
7And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
8And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
9Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
11And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
12And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
13And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
16I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
17For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

Chapter 23
1Then their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate. 2They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king."
6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.
7Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
8Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him.
9So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.
10The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.
11Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.
12That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been enemies.
13Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,
14and said to them, "You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people. But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse him of.
15Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death.
16Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him."

Chapter 23
1Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. 2They began to state their case: 'This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.'
6Oh, is he a Galilean?' Pilate asked.
7When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod’s jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time.
8Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
9He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.
10Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.
11Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
12(Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day.)
13Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,
14and he announced his verdict. 'You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
15Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.
16So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.'
17
18Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, 'Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!'
19(Barabbas was in prison for taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the government, and for murder.)
20Pilate argued with them, because he wanted to release Jesus.
21But they kept shouting, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'

And he answered him, "You have said so." 4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man." 5But they were urgent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place."
6When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
7And when he learned that he belonged to Herod 's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.

15Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him.
16I will therefore punish and release him."

Chapter 23
1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king."
6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.
7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.
9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him.
11Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.
12That day Herod and Pilate became friends—before this they had been enemies.
13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people,
14and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.
15Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.
16Therefore, I will punish him and then release him."
