Luke 9:43-58
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 9
43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was astonished at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44As for you, let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of Man is going to be handed over to men.' 45But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not comprehend it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.
46Now an argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest.
47But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their hearts, took a child and had him stand by His side,
48and He said to them, 'Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.'
49John answered and said, 'Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow along with us.'
50But Jesus said to him, 'Do not hinder him; for the one who is not against you is for you.'
51When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;
52and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.
53And they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.
54When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, 'Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?'
55But He turned and rebuked them.
56And they went on to another village.
King James Version
44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

Chapter 9
43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. While everyone was amazed at all the things he was doing, he told his disciples, 44"Let these words sink in: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men."
46An argument started among them about who was the greatest of them.
47But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand next to him.
48He told them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes him who sent me. For whoever is least among you—this one is great."
51When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up, he determined to journey to Jerusalem.
52He sent messengers ahead of himself, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him.
53But they did not welcome him, because he determined to journey to Jerusalem.
54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"
New Living Translation
Chapter 9
43Awe gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power. While everyone was marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44Listen to me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.' 45But they didn’t know what he meant. Its significance was hidden from them, so they couldn’t understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest.
47But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side.
48Then he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me. Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.'
51As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
52He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival.
53But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem.
54When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, 'Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up ?'
55But Jesus turned and rebuked them.
56So they went on to another village.
