Chapter 10

36And He said to them, 'What do you want Me to do for you?' 37They said to Him, 'Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.' 38But Jesus said to them, 'You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?' 39They said to Him, 'We are able.' And Jesus said to them, 'The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.'
41Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with James and John.

36And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you 37They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. 38But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with 39And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: 40But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. 41And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

37They answered him, "Allow us to sit at your right and at your left in your glory."
38Jesus said to them, "You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"
39"We are able," they told him. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with. 40But to sit at my right or left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
41When the ten disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John.

Chapter 10

36What is your request?' he asked.
37They replied, 'When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.'
38But Jesus said to them, 'You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?'
39Oh yes,' they replied, 'we are able!' Then Jesus told them, 'You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering. 40But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.'
41When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.
