Chapter 11

30Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.' 31And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying, 'If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32But should we say, ‘From men’?'—they were afraid of the people, for they all considered John to have been a real prophet. 33Answering Jesus, they *said, 'We do not know.' And Jesus *said to them, 'Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.'

30The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me. 31And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
32But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. 33And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

31They discussed it among themselves: "If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32But if we say, ‘Of human origin’"—they were afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought that John was truly a prophet.
33So they answered Jesus, "We don’t know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

30Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human? Answer me!'
31They talked it over among themselves. 'If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John. 32But do we dare say it was merely human?' For they were afraid of what the people would do, because everyone believed that John was a prophet.
33So they finally replied, 'We don’t know.' And Jesus responded, 'Then I won’t tell you by what authority I do these things.'
