Mark 7:7-24
New American Standard Bible
9He was also saying to them, 'You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
10For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘THE ONE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS CERTAINLY TO BE PUT TO DEATH’;
11but you say, ‘If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is, given to God),’
12you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;
13thereby invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.'
14After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, 'Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:
15there is nothing outside the person which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which come out of the person are what defile the person .'
16
17And when He later entered a house, away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him about the parable.
18And He *said to them, 'Are you so lacking in understanding as well? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the person from outside cannot defile him,
19because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?' ( Thereby He declared all foods clean.)
20And He was saying, 'That which comes out of the person, that is what defiles the person.
21For from within, out of the hearts of people, come the evil thoughts, acts of sexual immorality, thefts, murders, acts of adultery,
22deeds of greed, wickedness, deceit, indecent behavior, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
23All these evil things come from within and defile the person.'
King James Version
8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
10For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
11But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
12And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
13Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
14And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
15There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
16If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
17And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
18And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

8Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition."
9He also said to them, "You have a fine way of invalidating God’s command in order to set up your tradition!
10For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.
11But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban’" (that is, an offering devoted to God),
12"you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.
13You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things."
14Summoning the crowd again, he told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand:
15Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him."
16
17When he went into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable.
18He said to them, "Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?
19For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated" (thus he declared all foods clean ).
20And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
21For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,
22adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, self-indulgence, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
23All these evil things come from within and defile a person."
New Living Translation
9Then he said, 'You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.
10For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’
11But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’
12In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.
13And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.'
14Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. 'All of you listen,' he said, 'and try to understand.
15It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart. '
16
17Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used.
18Don’t you understand either?' he asked. 'Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?
19Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.' (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)
20And then he added, 'It is what comes from inside that defiles you.
21For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
23All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.'

Chapter 7
7in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ 8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men."
9And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!
10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’
11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban"’ (that is, given to God) —
12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,
13thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do."
14And he called the people to him again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand:
15There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him."
16
17And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.
18And he said to them, "Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,
19since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
20And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
21For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,
22coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.
23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."
New International Version
9And he continued, "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!
10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’
11But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)—
12then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.
13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."
14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.
15Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them."
16
17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.
18"Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?
19For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
20He went on: "What comes out of a person is what defiles them.
21For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
23All these evils come from inside and defile a person."
New King James Version
9He said to them, “ All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’
11But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God),
12then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,
13making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
14When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:
15There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.
16If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
17When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.
18So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,
19because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”
20And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.
21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
23All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
