Matthew 10:9-40
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 10
9Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his support. 11And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave that city. 12As you enter the house, give it your greeting. 13If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace. 14And whoever does not receive you nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or city, shake the dust off your feet. 15Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment, than for that city.
16Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be as wary as serpents, and as innocent as doves.
17But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the courts and flog you in their synagogues;
18and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
19But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour.
20For it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking in you.
21Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.
22And you will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.
24A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master.
25It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!
26So do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
27What I tell you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim on the housetops.
28And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29Are two sparrows not sold for an assarion? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
30But even the hairs of your head are all counted.
31So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.
32Therefore, everyone who confesses Me before people, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
33But whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
34Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35For I came to TURN A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW;
36and A PERSON’S ENEMIES will be the members of his household.
37The one who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
38And the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
39The one who has found his life will lose it, and the one who has lost his life on My account will find it.
King James Version
Chapter 10
9Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
11And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.
12And when ye come into an house, salute it.
13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
15Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
17But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
21And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
22And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
23But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
24The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
25It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
26Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
27What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Chapter 10
9Don’t acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts. 10Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food. 11When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12Greet a household when you enter it, 13and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you. 14If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town. 15Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
16"Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.
17Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts and flog you in their synagogues.
18You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.
19But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,
20because it isn’t you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.
21"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
22You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
23When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.
25It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much more the members of his household!
26"Therefore, don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known.
27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops.
28Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent.
30But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
31So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32"Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
33But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.
34Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
36 and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.

New Living Translation
Chapter 10
9Don’t take any money in your money belts — no gold, silver, or even copper coins. 10Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.
11Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.
12When you enter the home, give it your blessing.
13If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.
14If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.
15I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.
16Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.
17But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.
18You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.
19When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.
20For it is not you who will be speaking — it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.
22And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.
23When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.
24Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.
25Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!
26But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.
27What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!
28Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29What is the price of two sparrows — one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.
30And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.
31So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.
32Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
33But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
35‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36Your enemies will be right in your own household!’
37If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.
38If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
39If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
