Nehemiah 5:15-18
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
15
But the previous governors who were before me laid burdens on the people and took from them bread and wine besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants domineered the people. But I did not do so because of
my
fear of God.
16
I also applied myself to the work on this wall; we did not buy any land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work.
17
Moreover,
there were
at my table 150 Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us.
18
Now that which was prepared for each day was one ox
and
six choice sheep; also birds were prepared for me, and every ten days all
sorts of
wine
were provided
in abundance. Yet for
all
this I did not request the governor’s food
allowance,
because the forced labor was heavy on this people.
King James Version
Chapter 5
15
But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
16
Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.
17
Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.
18
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
15
The governors who preceded me had heavily burdened the people, taking from them food and wine as well as a pound of silver. Their subordinates also oppressed the people, but because of the fear of God, I didn’t do this.
16
Instead, I devoted myself to the construction of this wall, and all my subordinates were gathered there for the work. We didn’t buy any land.
17
There were 150 Jews and officials, as well as guests from the surrounding nations at my table.
18
Each day, one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me. An abundance of all kinds of wine was provided every ten days. But I didn’t demand the food allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
15
The former governors, in contrast, had laid heavy burdens on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine, besides forty pieces of silver. Even their assistants took advantage of the people. But because I feared God, I did not act that way.
16
I also devoted myself to working on the wall and refused to acquire any land. And I required all my servants to spend time working on the wall.
17
I asked for nothing, even though I regularly fed 150 Jewish officials at my table, besides all the visitors from other lands!
18
The provisions I paid for each day included one ox, six choice sheep or goats, and a large number of poultry. And every ten days we needed a large supply of all kinds of wine. Yet I refused to claim the governor’s food allowance because the people already carried a heavy burden.
English Standard Version
Chapter 5
15
The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens on the people and took from them for their daily ration forty shekels of silver. Even their servants lorded it over the people. But I did not do so, because of the fear of God.
16
I also persevered in the work on this wall, and we acquired no land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work.
17
Moreover, there were at my table 150 men, Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us.
18
Now what was prepared at my expense for each day was one ox and six choice sheep and birds, and every ten days all kinds of wine in abundance. Yet for all this I did not demand the food allowance of the governor, because the service was too heavy on this people.
New International Version
Chapter 5
15
But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.
16
Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land.
17
Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations.
18
Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.
New King James Version
Chapter 5
15
But the former governors who
were
before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because of the fear of God.
16
Indeed, I also continued the work on this wall, and we did not buy any land. All my servants
were
gathered there for the work.
17
And at my table
were
one hundred and fifty Jews and rulers, besides those who came to us from the nations around us.
18
Now
that
which was prepared daily
was
one ox
and
six choice sheep. Also fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine. Yet in spite of this I did not demand the governor’s provisions, because the bondage was heavy on this people.
