Chapter 20

13Do not love sleep, or you will become poor; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with food. 14'Bad, bad,' says the buyer, But when he goes his way, then he boasts. 15There is gold, and an abundance of jewels; But lips of knowledge are a more precious thing. 16Take his garment when he becomes guarantor for a stranger; And for foreigners, seize a pledge from him. 17Bread obtained by a lie is sweet to a person, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel. 18Prepare plans by consultation, And make war by wise guidance. 19One who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with a gossip. 20He who curses his father or his mother, His lamp will go out in time of darkness. 21An inheritance gained in a hurry at the beginning Will not be blessed in the end. 22Do not say, 'I will repay evil'; Wait for the Lord, and He will save you. 23 Differing weights are an abomination to the Lord, And a false scale is not good. 24A man’s steps are ordained by the Lord; How then can a person understand his way? 25It is a trap for a person to say carelessly, 'It is holy!' And after the vows to make inquiry. 26A wise king scatters the wicked, And drives a threshing wheel over them. 27The spirit of a person is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the innermost parts of his being. 28 Loyalty and truth watch over the king, And he upholds his throne by loyalty. 29The glory of young men is their strength, And the honor of old men is their gray hair.

14It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
17Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
19He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
20Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
21An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
22Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.
23Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.
24Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?
25It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.
26A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
27The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
28Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
29The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

Chapter 20

13Don’t love sleep, or you will become poor; open your eyes, and you’ll have enough to eat.
14"It’s worthless, it’s worthless!" the buyer says, but after he is on his way, he gloats.
15There is gold and a multitude of jewels, but knowledgeable lips are a rare treasure.
16Take his garment, for he has put up security for a stranger; get collateral if it is for foreigners.
17Food gained by fraud is sweet to a person, but afterward his mouth is full of gravel.
18Finalize plans with counsel, and wage war with sound guidance.
19The one who reveals secrets is a constant gossip; avoid someone with a big mouth.
20Whoever curses his father or mother— his lamp will go out in deep darkness.
21An inheritance gained prematurely will not be blessed ultimately.
22Don’t say, "I will avenge this evil!" Wait on the Lord, and he will rescue you.
23Differing weights are detestable to the Lord, and dishonest scales are unfair.
24Even a courageous person’s steps are determined by the Lord, so how can anyone understand his own way?
25It is a trap for anyone to dedicate something rashly and later to reconsider his vows.
26A wise king separates out the wicked and drives the threshing wheel over them.
27The Lord’s lamp sheds light on a person’s life, searching the innermost parts.
28Loyalty and faithfulness guard a king; through loyalty he maintains his throne.
29The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair.

Chapter 20

13If you love sleep, you will end in poverty. Keep your eyes open, and there will be plenty to eat!
14The buyer haggles over the price, saying, 'It’s worthless,' then brags about getting a bargain!
15Wise words are more valuable than much gold and many rubies.
16Get security from someone who guarantees a stranger’s debt. Get a deposit if he does it for foreigners.
17Stolen bread tastes sweet, but it turns to gravel in the mouth.
18Plans succeed through good counsel; don’t go to war without wise advice.
19A gossip goes around telling secrets, so don’t hang around with chatterers.
20If you insult your father or mother, your light will be snuffed out in total darkness.
21An inheritance obtained too early in life is not a blessing in the end.
22Don’t say, 'I will get even for this wrong.' Wait for the Lord to handle the matter.
23The Lord detests double standards; he is not pleased by dishonest scales.
24The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?
25Don’t trap yourself by making a rash promise to God and only later counting the cost.
26A wise king scatters the wicked like wheat, then runs his threshing wheel over them.
27The Lord’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive.
28Unfailing love and faithfulness protect the king; his throne is made secure through love.
29The glory of the young is their strength; the gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old.
