Chapter 1

14And they raised their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
15Then she said, 'Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her gods; return after your sister-in-law.' 16But Ruth said, 'Do not plead with me to leave you or to turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you sleep, I will sleep. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. 17Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord do so to me, and worse, if anything but death separates me from you.' 18When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped speaking to her about it.
19So they both went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was stirred because of them, and the women said, 'Is this Naomi?' 20But she said to them, 'Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

14Again they wept loudly, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15Naomi said, "Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. Follow your sister-in-law."
16But Ruth replied: Don’t plead with me to abandon you or to return and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me, and do so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.
18When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped talking to her.
19The two of them traveled until they came to Bethlehem. When they entered Bethlehem, the whole town was excited about their arrival and the local women exclaimed, "Can this be Naomi?"
20"Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara," she answered, "for the Almighty has made me very bitter.

14And again they wept together, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye. But Ruth clung tightly to Naomi. 15Look,' Naomi said to her, 'your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. You should do the same.'
16But Ruth replied, 'Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!' 18When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she said nothing more.
19So the two of them continued on their journey. When they came to Bethlehem, the entire town was excited by their arrival. 'Is it really Naomi?' the women asked.
20Don’t call me Naomi,' she responded. 'Instead, call me Mara, for the Almighty has made life very bitter for me.

19So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, "Can this be Naomi?"
20"Don’t call me Naomi, " she told them. "Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.
